Thursday, October 29, 2026 by Christopher Ramirez

On Thursday, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado expressed her gratitude toward former U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their influential roles in Venezuela's political developments, asserting that the country’s shift to democracy is "unstoppable."

Speaking at a press conference in Caracas—her first since returning to Venezuela—Machado praised Washington's crucial involvement in the political changes that followed the U.S. operation on January 3rd.

Her statements were circulated via video by EVTV Miami and PanAm Post, and were also reported by the EFE news agency.

"I want to thank the President of the United States, Donald Trump, the U.S. government, and Secretary of State, Marco Rubio," Machado stated, highlighting what she described as the vision, courage, and decisive actions of the U.S. administration.

She emphasized that the military action on January 3rd created an opportunity to move toward a democratic system following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces.

"This gateway to freedom has been opened," she remarked, referencing the impact of that operation.

Machado also expressed her hope for Venezuela to become the U.S.'s strongest ally in Latin America, as a result of the anticipated political changes.

"My presence here in Venezuela and the events of the past three days show that President Trump's three-phase plan is progressing," she announced.

The opposition leader confirmed that recent talks and developments have helped clarify the timeline for the transition. She specifically mentioned Marco Rubio's role and the potential for presidential elections to be held in 2027.

According to Machado, the Secretary of State has outlined a sequence of events that include "holding presidential elections in 2027."

She believes this plan addresses the urgent need for political solutions for Venezuelans and aims to overcome the nation's current uncertainty.

"This responsibly addresses the urgency of the country," she remarked.

However, holding presidential elections in 2027 still hinges on achieving the necessary political and institutional agreements.

Machado reiterated that recent developments prove the political transformation process is irreversible.

"The democratic transition is unstoppable," she declared, earning applause from those in attendance.

In another part of her address, Machado thanked those who helped facilitate her return to Venezuela after spending nearly ten months abroad.

Her statements came four days after she returned to Venezuela on Sunday, following almost ten months overseas. Her return was announced with a brief message to Venezuelans: "I am here, with you."

One day after her return, the Vente Venezuela party confirmed Machado's willingness to meet with Delcy Rodríguez to discuss the transition process, although no formal meeting between the two leaders had been announced at that time.
