A Cuban Woman's Hilarious Tale of a Cooking Mishap in the U.S. Lands Her in the Hospital

Thursday, October 29, 2026 by Grace Ramos

What was supposed to be a simple craving for croquettes turned into a frightening ordeal for a Cuban woman living in the United States. She suffered second-degree burns on both feet and one arm after the oil she left heating in the kitchen caught fire. Despite the accident landing her in the hospital, she recounted the incident with such humor that her story has captured attention on TikTok.

Known on the platform as @frappuccina_, the young woman shared a video detailing, with laughter and wit, how an ordinary Sunday spiraled into an unexpected nightmare.

A Lapse in Attention Leads to Disaster

According to her account, it all began around 5 p.m. when she found herself craving croquettes. Despite having both an air fryer and a traditional oil fryer at home, she opted to cook them in a pan. She heated the oil and then, forgetting all about it, wandered off.

"Miraculously, I forgot," she recounted with irony. Instead of keeping an eye on the stove, she ventured into the bathroom, her bedroom, and even took a "tour around the house" while the oil continued to heat.

Confronting the Flames

When she finally returned, she was greeted by a large flame threatening to reach the microwave above the stove. Rather than fleeing from the fire, she made a decision that worsened the situation: attempting to move the pan.

"This girl right here decided that running from the fire was not an option; she was going to tackle it head-on," she joked about her reaction.

In the midst of the panic, the flames caught her clothing, and while trying to remove it, she dropped the pan, spilling boiling oil across the kitchen. The carpet also caught fire.

"I literally turned into a French fry," she recalled with a chuckle. "I looked down and saw my clothes burning on me," she added.

Emergency Response and Hospital Stay

The Cuban woman managed to exit the apartment and immediately called 911. Her story included a humorous note about the emergency call, during which her English skills surprisingly shone through.

"Believe me, in those stressful moments, the universe's fluent English will come out. I was fluent, fluent in English," she quipped.

Despite the humor, the aftermath was serious. She sustained second-degree burns and required medical attention, staying in the hospital for several days.

She humorously described her hospital stay as a vacation at a "five-star all-inclusive hotel, two days and three nights."

In the video description, she clarified that she recorded her account under the influence of anesthesia and opioids administered for pain relief. She also noted that the accident had occurred nearly a month before she decided to share her experience.

Fortunately, she reported feeling much better and took the opportunity to warn others against distraction while cooking.

"When you're frying or doing something in the kitchen, don't leave; don't move. Stay within a square meter," she advised.

And, true to her style, she concluded her story with another witty remark: "Because what can happen? Nothing: you win a stay in a five-star hotel."

Her TikTok story had surpassed 84,500 views, with thousands of likes and hundreds of shares. It's a painful experience she managed to recount with humor, and a lesson she won't forget: never leave oil unattended on the stove.

Understanding Kitchen Safety and Emergency Procedures

What should you do if oil catches fire in the kitchen?

If oil catches fire, do not attempt to move the pan. Instead, cover it with a metal lid to extinguish the flames and turn off the heat source. Never use water, as it can cause the fire to spread.

How can you prevent kitchen fires when cooking with oil?

To prevent kitchen fires, never leave cooking oil unattended, keep flammable items away from the stove, and always have a fire extinguisher nearby. Regularly check the temperature of the oil to avoid overheating.

What are the immediate steps to take if you suffer a burn?

If you suffer a burn, cool the area under running water for at least 10 minutes, cover it with a sterile dressing, and seek medical attention if necessary. Avoid applying creams or oils to the burn.
