A Cuban driver issued a warning on Wednesday within the Facebook group "Transportistas por toda Cuba" about a massive pothole located at kilometer 232 on the National Highway. This treacherous road condition has already caused his front tires to burst, and he cautions that it could potentially lead to a fatal accident.

Adrián Llorente shared a nighttime photograph capturing the water-filled pothole, loose stones, and broken asphalt, along with an urgent plea: "Please share this so that some authority becomes aware of this hole. It's located at km 232 on the National Highway. Last night, both of my front tires blew out, and there were 17 drivers with me. This will lead to a tragedy. Action must be taken promptly."

Support for Llorente's warning quickly surfaced from another driver who had experienced similar damage at the same spot while traveling toward Camagüey: "When I was heading there, I burst both of my left tires in that same hole, and I was one of 11 drivers who faced the same issue."

A third transporter recounted an even more severe incident, claiming that his vehicle's front fender struts snapped upon hitting one of these potholes, nearly causing his truck, loaded with 240 quintals, to overturn. "Thankfully, I didn't flip over," he wrote, urging that the complaint reach the responsible authorities.

Infrastructure Neglect and Rising Concerns

Other drivers painted a broader picture of the road's deterioration. "The highway is riddled with potholes on both lanes. That's why driving at night is life-threatening," one driver warned. With no solutions in sight, some users feel resigned to the only viable option: "Memorize the road and proceed cautiously."

Cuba's roads have been neglected for years. A viral video from September depicted drivers filling potholes with stones and debris just to continue their journey. In April, a truck traveling toward Guantánamo overturned at kilometer 297 on the same highway after hitting an unrepaired pothole. In August, a sinkhole nearly spanning the entire road was reported at the exit toward Artemisa, with no official signage to warn drivers.

Failed Repair Efforts and Alarming Accident Rates

The Ministry of Transport admitted to the National Assembly that only 22.3% of the pothole repair plan was executed in the first half of 2024, with 12 out of 25 asphalt plants not operational. By mid-2025, 75% of the country's roads were in poor or fair condition. As of 2026, Villa Clara has barely produced 35 tons of asphalt for patching, hindered by outdated facilities and frequent shutdowns due to fuel shortages.

Traffic accidents in Cuba claimed 750 lives in 2025, marking an 18.2% increase from the previous year. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, there were already 153 fatalities and over a thousand injuries. In this context, Llorente's warning carries significant weight: "This is looking grim," another driver noted, convinced that without immediate intervention, kilometer 232 will inevitably become the site of a tragedy.

Understanding Cuba's Pothole Crisis

What is causing the poor condition of Cuba's roads?

The poor state of Cuba's roads is primarily due to years of neglect, lack of maintenance, and inadequate infrastructure investment by the government, compounded by economic challenges.

What measures have been taken to address Cuba's road conditions?

Efforts to repair roads have been insufficient, with only a small fraction of planned repairs completed and many asphalt plants inactive due to resource constraints.

How are Cuban drivers coping with dangerous road conditions?

Cuban drivers often resort to memorizing hazardous sections and driving cautiously, as well as sometimes filling potholes themselves to reduce risks.

What impact have road conditions had on traffic accidents in Cuba?

Poor road conditions have significantly contributed to an increase in traffic accidents, resulting in a higher number of fatalities and injuries.
