Approximately 95,000 residents in Villa Clara have started receiving a monthly food package this week, which includes five pounds of rice, one pound of sugar, and a pound of peas. This initiative is part of a Cuban government program targeting households deemed most vulnerable.

The rice is provided as a donation from China and distributed free of charge, while recipients are required to pay for the sugar and peas. Authorities plan to continue the distribution until at least January 2027, as reported by the Agencia Cubana de Noticias (ACN).

Eligibility for Food Assistance

Despite the initial identification of 125,100 potential beneficiaries, only about 95,000 individuals are currently receiving the aid due to a social worker study. Maraiky León Iglesias, head of the Provincial Department of Prevention, Assistance, and Social Work, stated that the primary criterion is a monthly household income below 4,000 Cuban pesos per person.

The assessment also considers specific vulnerabilities, such as elderly individuals living alone, pregnant women, children under five, underweight or chronically ill minors, and mothers of three or more children who are household heads.

Additionally, families impacted by weather events and those where someone sacrifices their own meals for children or elderly members are eligible for consideration.

However, the official noted that simply belonging to these groups does not automatically qualify a family for assistance. Each family unit must meet the established criteria.

Exclusion reasons include providing false information and the presence of able-bodied individuals who choose not to work.

Social workers are continuously reviewing the registry to potentially add new beneficiaries, according to provincial authorities.

Aid in the Midst of Shortages

This program is part of a national distribution effort announced in early October by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, aiming to provide monthly packages to more than 883,000 identified vulnerable Cubans.

The selection process for families receiving these food packages has sparked controversy in other provinces. For instance, in Contramaestre, Santiago de Cuba, an elderly person was reportedly excluded because they have a daughter living in Brazil, despite no official rule stating such a reason for exclusion.

Understanding the Food Distribution Program in Cuba

What are the eligibility criteria for receiving the food package in Villa Clara?

The main criterion is a monthly income below 4,000 Cuban pesos per person in the household. Additional considerations include vulnerabilities like elderly individuals living alone, pregnant women, and families affected by weather events.

Why are some people excluded from receiving the food package?

Exclusions can occur if false information is provided or if able-bodied individuals in the household choose not to work. Meeting the criteria does not automatically guarantee assistance.

How long will the food distribution program continue?

Authorities plan to maintain the distribution until at least January 2027, ensuring continued support for vulnerable households.
