Fire Forces Evacuation of Elderly and Disabled Residents in Miami: 15 Displaced, Two Hospitalized

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 by Emma Garcia

In the early hours of Tuesday, a blaze erupted in a five-story residential building in Flagami, situated west of Miami, necessitating the evacuation of numerous residents.

The affected individuals included the elderly, bedridden persons, and those relying on wheelchairs. The incident resulted in 15 individuals being displaced and two requiring hospitalization, as confirmed by local authorities.

According to Miami Fire Rescue, 35 fire units responded to the emergency at Blue Lakes Apartments, located at 5275 NW 7th Street, near NW 53rd Avenue. The alarm was raised around 2:30 a.m.

The fire originated in apartment 410 on the fourth floor of the building, which houses a total of 52 units.

Upon reaching that floor, firefighters encountered an extreme situation: "Thick smoke filled the hallway and visibility was nearly zero," rescuers described to CBS Miami. It took between 30 and 40 minutes to get the flames under control.

The profile of the residents made the evacuation particularly challenging. The building is home to many elderly, bedridden individuals, and others who depend on wheelchairs, requiring firefighters to physically assist them out of the building.

The situation was complicated further as the building's sole elevator sustained water damage, leaving those unable to use stairs without an autonomous escape route.

Four individuals were evaluated on-site; two were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital due to smoke inhalation and were reported to be in stable condition.

While the flames were mostly contained within the apartment where the fire began, smoke and water inflicted damage on other parts of the building, including the fourth floor. All 12 apartments on that floor—eight of which were occupied—were rendered immediately uninhabitable.

The fire took place in one of South Florida's neighborhoods with a high concentration of Cuban-Americans. In August 2026, a similar incident in a Little Havana building displaced over twenty residents.

The American Red Cross arrived at the scene to assess the needs of those displaced and to coordinate necessary assistance, which could include temporary housing, food, clothing, and emotional support.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
