A 45-year-old woman named Tanisha Shelton was taken into custody last Saturday in the Brownsville neighborhood, northwest of Miami-Dade. She is accused of dousing a 33-year-old man with a flammable substance and igniting him following a dispute.

The assault resulted in the man suffering burns over at least 80% of his body, leaving him in extremely critical condition, according to local news reports.

The victim, identified as Nathaniel Devon Mathis, was discovered unconscious at the intersection of Northwest 63rd Street and Northwest 25th Avenue at approximately 6:02 p.m. on Saturday, October 24.

Emergency responders swiftly transported him to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where medical staff determined he had sustained second and third-degree burns over a major portion of his body.

Authorities have indicated that his chances of survival are slim.

A Threat Executed Hours Later

According to the arrest report, Shelton and Mathis had a heated verbal confrontation earlier in the day before the attack took place.

During this argument, Shelton allegedly threatened to leave and return with someone to assault him.

She followed through on her threat, returning to the scene with a white plastic bucket containing an unidentified accelerant inside a plastic bag.

Once face-to-face with Mathis, she borrowed a lighter from a witness at the scene, reignited their verbal spat, doused him with the flammable liquid, and set him ablaze before attempting to flee.

Witnesses Play a Crucial Role in Apprehension

The quick actions of those who witnessed the attack were instrumental in Shelton's arrest.

One of the bystanders sprayed her with pepper spray to prevent her escape, while others provided officers with an accurate physical description: she was wearing a brown dress and purple sneakers.

Authorities found her nearby and arrested her without incident, still wearing the same attire.

After her arrest, Shelton was taken to the Miami-Dade Police Department's Homicide Division, where she asserted her right to legal representation.

Denied Bail and Facing Serious Charges

On Monday, Shelton appeared before a bond court judge, who denied her release, as reported by Telemundo 51.

She faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and arson causing serious bodily injury.

She has been held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) since early Sunday morning.

Authorities noted that the investigation remains ongoing and have not ruled out further arrests.

A Neighborhood Plagued by Neglect and Conflict

The attack took place in Brownsville, a historically troubled area with dilapidated housing and shuttered public buildings that have remained standing for years without demolition.

Local residents interviewed by Univision Miami described an environment where disputes are common, partly because people experiencing homelessness use these abandoned structures as shelters.

A neighbor, identified only as Ana, who chose to remain anonymous due to fear of retaliation, expressed sorrow over what happened to Mathis, whom she described as homeless.

"This is terrible. I feel sorry for the man, even though he's homeless. But no one deserves that," she remarked.

Regarding the abandoned buildings in the area, the same neighbor noted, "It's been over three years since they cleared everyone out, promising to demolish and fix them. I don't know, nothing's been done."

Authorities have not disclosed the exact relationship between Shelton and Mathis or the specific reason for their argument that led to the attack.
