A motorcyclist known as Yumar experienced a dramatic spill during the weekend motorcycle races held at the former Santa Marta airport in Cárdenas, Matanzas. The incident, which could have ended tragically, concluded with a sigh of relief from all attendees.
The fall was caught on video by Christian Arbolaez, a local independent content creator and communicator from Cárdenas, who shared the footage with his audience.
"What could have been a disaster turned out to be just a big scare," Arbolaez commented alongside the shared video.
Despite the spectacular nature of the fall, Yumar managed to stand up on his own, walk around, and wave to the audience, signaling that he was unharmed.
Eyewitnesses reported that the racer suffered only minor scrapes on his hands. This was largely thanks to his protective gear and helmet, which shielded him from more severe injuries.
An ambulance took Yumar to the hospital as a precautionary measure, though he was in good health.
Emergency Preparedness Praised by Attendees
Those present at the event appreciated the presence of emergency personnel from the outset of the races, highlighting this as a sign of the event's solid organization.
The races attracted motorcyclists from various Cuban provinces and numerous fans. The former Santa Marta airport—also known as the Kawama aerodrome—serves as a frequent location for motorcycle competitions in the Cárdenas-Varadero area, featuring categories for both high and low displacement bikes, an open category, and electric motorcycles.
Safety Concerns in Cuban Motorcycle Racing
This fortunate outcome stands in stark contrast to past incidents on the island. Earlier this year, a young man tragically died after his racing motorcycle collided with a truck in Santiago de Cuba. Another Cuban motorcyclist lost his life in February 2024 during a motorcycle exhibition accident in Camagüey.
Arbolaez emphasized the necessity of conducting such sports in designated areas: "Although speed inherently carries risks, participants underscored the importance of practicing this sport in prepared venues, rather than on the streets."
"Thankfully, it was more of a scare than anything else this time. Wishing Yumar a swift recovery!" Arbolaez concluded in his post.
