The Cuban Under-18 baseball team will not be competing in the World Cup following a 5-0 shutout defeat by Nicaragua in the Pan American Championship held in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic, as reported by the sports outlet JIT.

This loss eliminated any chance Cuba had of securing one of the four available spots for the world event slated to take place in Pingtan, China, and also prevented them from advancing to the Super Round of the continental tournament.

Guided by head coach Alexei Moré from Villa Clara, the Cuban team concluded the group stage with one win and two losses, placing them fourth in Group B. In contrast, Venezuela and Nicaragua advanced to the next stage.

Emil Torrez from Nicaragua was the standout performer of the match, pitching a complete game of seven innings, striking out seven batters, and allowing no runs. Despite Cuba hitting seven times, they failed to translate those hits into runs.

Cuban starter Chrystofer Sarría initially controlled Nicaragua's offense, limiting them to just two hits over five innings. However, in the sixth inning, a double by Luis García led to a pitching change, bringing in reliever Luis Daniel Rodríguez. Unfortunately, Rodríguez couldn't hold back Nicaragua's momentum, and crucial errors, including a shortstop mistake, a hit batter, and a pinch-hit single by Berman Moreno, allowed two decisive runs.

Despite their seven hits, the Cuban offense couldn't score at all during the game.

Cuba's tournament journey began with a narrow 5-4 loss to Venezuela on October 21, where they let a 4-2 lead slip away in the seventh inning. They bounced back with a 5-4 victory over Mexico in nine innings, thanks to the WBSC tiebreaker rule, but the setback against Nicaragua dashed their hopes.

This elimination adds to a series of disappointing outcomes for Cuba's junior baseball teams. In September, the Under-15 team also missed out on their World Cup in Mérida, Mexico, after a 3-2 loss to Germany.

The broader context exacerbates the situation: In May, the National Baseball Commission suspended the national Under-12, Under-15, and Under-18 championships due to an energy crisis and a lack of fuel for interprovincial travel, replacing them with local physical and technical evaluations.

Historically, Cuba has been the most successful nation in the Under-18 World Cup with 11 titles, although their last win was in 2004. Since 2017, when they finished sixth, Cuba has not qualified for the global tournament, missing out on the 2019, 2022, and 2023 editions. With the latest elimination in this Pan American Championship, their absence will continue until at least 2027, marking four consecutive editions without participating in the global event.
