This Wednesday, Aena announced the bidding process for a contract aimed at upgrading the infrastructure at Valencia-Manises Airport. This project involves significant nighttime runway closures, expected to occur between May 2027 and July 2029.

The contract, valued at over 41 million euros, outlines three major projects: a comprehensive renewal of runway 12-30, upgrades to several taxiways, and improvements to the perimeter road.

While the estimated duration for these renovations is 27 months, the contract is currently in the bidding stage and has yet to be awarded.

To conduct work directly impacting the flight infrastructure, Aena plans to limit runway use from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.

The airport will not necessarily be closed every night during this period; restrictions will only be enforced when specific phases of construction require it.

According to the official statement, airlines and various service providers will be informed well in advance of the construction schedule to allow them to adjust operations, either at alternative airports or by reorganizing their activities.

Aena emphasized that the closures will be managed "in a coordinated manner and in collaboration with all parties involved in airport operations." A detailed night-by-night schedule of restrictions has not been released.

The most extensive work involves renewing the runway's pavement and its margins, correcting slopes, and performing leveling tasks.

The project also includes modernizing the pilot support lighting system, known as PAPI, with LED technology, and upgrading drainage and channeling systems.

The bidding process also includes improvements to the configuration of several taxiways for increased operational efficiency, as well as the renewal of aeronautical signage, strengthening of airfield lighting electrical installations, and the rehabilitation of the perimeter road with new sections.

For those with scheduled flights in Valencia during this period, the most relevant alternative airports are Alicante-Elche (ALC) and Madrid-Barajas (MAD).

Currently, the Valencia airport operates nighttime flights to destinations such as Palma de Mallorca, Rome, Tenerife, Milan, and Ibiza between 10:00 PM and midnight, with early departures around 5:00 AM, which could be affected during certain construction phases.

These renovations are part of the DORA III investment program (2027-2031), approved by the Spanish government in September 2026, allocating 402.1 million euros to Valencia Airport, compared to 60.1 million in the previous regulatory period.

Across the Valencian Community, the planned investment exceeds 1.27 billion euros, with nearly 868 million allocated to Alicante-Elche airport.

Aena has stated it will provide airlines and service companies with detailed information on the closure schedule well in advance, allowing them to reorganize operations before work begins in May 2027.
