The National Weather Service (NWS) in Miami has heightened the flood warning for coastal areas in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach due to rising sea levels and the risk of flooding in streets, parking lots, and low-lying regions.

The agency has issued a Coastal Flood Warning in effect until 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, replacing the earlier advisory that was in place.

This action is taken because water levels are exceeding predictions, increasing the likelihood of moderate flooding during high tides.

According to the NWS, water accumulation could occur on streets, parks, and parking areas in coastal zones, potentially leading to isolated road closures.

High Tides and Heavy Rainfall Expected

In their 4:12 p.m. update on Wednesday, meteorologists warned that floods on Wednesday and Thursday might surpass anticipated levels and worsen over the weekend.

The greatest risk is expected between Friday and Monday, when the exceptionally high King Tides coincide with a weather system that could bring intense rainfall to South Florida.

The NWS forecasts rainfall totals of three to six inches along the metropolitan corridor of the east coast, with the potential for more than ten inches in worst-case scenarios.

The agency cautioned that uncertainty remains regarding the system's path and which areas will receive the heaviest rainfall.

The combination of heavy rain with elevated tides could impede water drainage and exacerbate flooding, particularly in coastal communities and low-lying areas.

Meteorologists also suggest that some regions of Palm Beach might experience severe flooding at the peak of the tidal cycle.

Dangerous Beach Conditions

This situation follows the heavy rains on Saturday, October 17, when the National Weather Service reported accumulations of 3.5 to 5.5 inches in parts of Broward and Palm Beach, prompting flash flood alerts.

The NWS continues to caution about a high risk of rip currents at beaches across the three counties through Friday night.

In Palm Beach, a hazardous surf advisory remains active until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, with breaking waves ranging from five to seven feet.

Authorities advise residents in flood-prone areas to secure their properties and anticipate potential travel difficulties.

Drivers should avoid flooded roads and never drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.

Inexperienced swimmers are encouraged to stay out of the water. Those caught in a rip current should avoid swimming against it, remain afloat, and attempt to move parallel to the shoreline.

The National Weather Service warned that if forecasts for heavy rainfall over the weekend hold, new flood alerts may be issued for South Florida.
