Five months have passed since Luna and Rex were rescued from a property associated with the pro-government singer Raúl Torres, yet they remain without a permanent home. On Tuesday, Animal Welfare Cuba (BAC) made an urgent plea for a loving family to adopt these two dogs.
Both dogs are around two years old and have received vaccinations, deworming, and sterilizations. BAC reports that Luna and Rex have regained their health and stability since being rescued, but they are still in need of a responsible and loving adopter.
“Today, months later, Luna and Rex have completely moved on from that dire situation. They have regained weight, stability, and a dignified life,” BAC shared in a recent statement. However, they emphasized that it’s not just about finding any home: “We are looking for a truly responsible adoption, from people who understand that adopting means a lifelong commitment.”
Luna features brown and white fur with spots and floppy ears, resembling a Pointer or Braco. Rex sports dark brown fur with a white spot on his snout, and has a similar breed. Those interested in adopting can reach out via private message to the @bac_org Instagram account.
The case gained significant attention last May when BAC and activist Javier Larrea exposed the conditions in which the dogs were found on the property linked to Torres: "Abandoned, without food, starving, howling in pain day and night, with dirty water bowls and no water."
The rescue operation, which took place on May 17, was described by the organization as a "long, intense, and exhausting" effort, filled with "hours of uncertainty, struggle, tension, and unwavering determination."
The identity of the involved party only heightened the case's impact. Raúl Torres — full name Raúl Alfonso Torres Rondón — is a singer-songwriter, a deputy of the National Assembly of People's Power, and a prominent figure aligned with the Cuban government. He is known for composing songs such as "Riding with Fidel" and "Soy por Fidel."
This stark contrast was highlighted by Larrea and BAC: "This guy preaches revolution and love for the people while letting innocent animals rot in his backyard like trash. Pure hypocrisy."
BAC, an animal advocacy group founded in January 2020 and driven by Larrea, has documented numerous animal abuse cases throughout 2026 in Cuba. The organization has also faced intimidation campaigns by Cuban authorities against its members.
"Luna and Rex are still waiting for a home," BAC concluded in their post, urging those unable to adopt to at least share their message: "Perhaps the family they've been waiting for months will see this post today."
