Cuban baseball player Javier Carabeo has opened up for the first time about how the regime's security apparatus thwarted his attempt to leave the Cuban national team during the 2022 Pan American Under-23 Baseball Championship in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Upon his return to Cuba, he faced punishment despite being assured that the issue would be forgotten.
This revelation was made during an episode of the podcast "Fuera de Serie" by Swing Completo, which aired on Monday.
Plan and Hotel Ambush
Carabeo recounted that he and his teammate Yulián Quintana had meticulously planned their escape to avoid detection. "It was the two of us: Yulian Quintana and me. We were told a van would be waiting for us at the back of the hotel to pick us up," explained the player from Mayabeque.
However, hotel security cameras tipped off the staff before they reached the rendezvous point. When a guard intercepted them, they claimed they were delivering items to family members, but the guard barred their exit.
Undeterred, they sought an alternative route. "We decided to use the emergency stairs," Carabeo recalled. But at the exit, the Cuban delegation's security personnel were already waiting, ordering them back to their rooms.
Interrogations Under Surveillance
The following day, while the rest of the team headed to the stadium, Carabeo and Quintana remained at the hotel under the watchful eyes of several security agents. These agents interrogated them, urging them to reveal who had orchestrated their escape.
The duo remained silent. Following hours of pressure, the tone shifted: "You are young. We understand that anyone can fill your heads with ideas. Everyone makes mistakes. We'll let you finish the championship."
Carabeo saw through their words. He led the tournament in home runs with three, and Quintana had performed well as a pitcher. "They needed us because they were competing for the gold medal. They let us finish the event," he stated. Ultimately, Cuba secured the silver medal.
Consequences Upon Returning
The supposed leniency turned out to be a postponed trap. A week after returning to Cuba, Carabeo was summoned to appear before the national and provincial commissioners, along with other unfamiliar individuals.
He was handed a two-year suspension from playing baseball in Cuba. Carabeo reminded them of their promise in Mexico: "Didn't you say everything would end there?"
The response was that attempting to leave the delegation couldn't go unpunished. His retort highlighted the contradiction: "Now that we're back in Cuba? But when you needed us, you let us play the championship."
In July 2022, the penalties for Carabeo and Quintana were confirmed. Two other teammates, Alfredo Fadraga and Yosvany Ávalos, faced a harsher fate. After escaping the hotel, they were captured by Aguascalientes police, handed over to the Cuban delegation, and banned for life upon returning to the island.
Similar Incidents
In August 2026, during the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican authorities identified suspected Cuban agents without credentials monitoring athletes at sports venues, some disguised in other delegations' uniforms. This led to the expulsion of nine Cuban diplomats from the country.
Just days before Carabeo's interview was published, two Cuban weightlifters defected from the delegation in Tepic, Mexico, during the Pan American weightlifting qualifiers for Lima 2027, joining the extensive list of athletes who have chosen escape as their path to freedom.
