Heartwarming Gesture: Cuban Man Aids 85-Year-Old Broom Seller in Rural Cuba

Monday, October 19, 2026 by Charlotte Gomez

An 85-year-old Cuban man, who walks through rural paths selling handmade brooms to make ends meet, received unexpected assistance from a compassionate individual. This man, moved by the elderly vendor's plight, decided to purchase all his brooms and gifted him 9,000 Cuban pesos.

The touching encounter was captured on video and shared on TikTok by user José Sierra, who paused to chat with the elderly man as he carried brooms over his shoulders.

During their conversation, the elderly man revealed that he crafts between 15 to 20 brooms before setting off on foot to sell them. Each broom is priced at a mere 70 Cuban pesos, highlighting the meager earnings from his hard work.

At the time of their meeting, he had 14 brooms, amounting to a total of 980 pesos. Sierra decided to buy them all and handed over 9,000 pesos in cash, counting the bills one by one in front of the emotional vendor.

"This is so you can buy at least a little oil and a couple of pounds of rice," Sierra remarked as he gave the money.

Deeply moved by the living conditions of the elderly man, Sierra expressed his frustration: "This is how people live here. He's eighty-five, as he said. And look at him, how he is! He doesn't even have a cane!"

Continuing Struggles Despite Generosity

One of the most striking moments of the recording occurred when, despite receiving help and selling all his brooms, the elderly man explained he couldn't return home yet because he had another order to fulfill.

His story sheds light on the economic hardships faced by many seniors in Cuba, where pensions are inadequate to cover basic necessities like food and medicine, forcing many retirees to continue working well into old age.

The Grim Reality of Cuban Pensions

The minimum pension in Cuba was raised to 4,000 pesos per month in September 2025, yet this amount remains insufficient compared to the high cost of food and other essential items.

Social media platforms have become instrumental in raising awareness of such situations and galvanizing aid. Recently, another case touched many Cubans when content creator @melissahabla_ launched a campaign to assist Rafael, a 76-year-old man from Holguín living in extreme poverty, receiving food, clothing, and medical supplies within 24 hours.

Sierra's act of kindness was accompanied by a reflection on the duty of Cubans living abroad to support those in need on the island: "Those of us who managed to leave can't change Cuba, but we can support the less fortunate. Many go there to sell even candy when they barely have enough for rice."
