Cuban singer-songwriter Melanie Santiler, 25, stated in Havana that "Cuba lacks swans and freedom," while discussing life on the island.
"It's challenging to talk about this, and it's challenging to be Cuban and live here," she expressed to the EFE agency during the unveiling of her debut visual album, "Los Cisnes."
Released on September 25 under her own label, MamiFinaRecords, "Los Cisnes" features ten tracks that explore alternative music, Latin pop, and local urban sounds.
The title track, recorded with fellow singer-songwriter Carlos Varela, incorporates the Cuban national anthem in a minor key, a technique Santiler described as a melancholic commentary on the island's reality.
"It speaks volumes about the pain and sadness of having so many people far away," the artist explained about the song, which she dedicated "to all Cubans around the world."
The Essence of "Los Cisnes"
Santiler characterized the project as a work made "in Cuba, from Cuba, and by Cubans," emphasizing that it reflects her identity "as a person, a Cuban, and a woman." The album addresses themes like loneliness, love, relationships, and daily life.
The artist further highlighted the structural challenges of producing music independently in Cuba, where there is no established music industry or labels to fund recordings. "It's an incredibly difficult process that you have to navigate on your own," she stated.
A Journey Through Music and Challenges
Before returning to Cuba to present the album, Santiler completed a tour in Spain, performing in cities such as Huesca, Burgos, Valencia, Las Palmas, Tenerife, Barcelona, and Madrid.
With 167,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and over 300,000 Instagram followers, the artist—who debuted in 2023—has been recognized by Rolling Stone in Spanish and Billboard Latin as an emerging Cuban artist making waves in the music scene.
In May, upon arriving at a concert at Havana's Meliá Cohiba, she announced "the album is coming," after a period away from social media while preparing her music. She described the event as "a closure and a beginning" of a new chapter.
Facing Censorship and Embracing Authenticity
Known artistically as La Mami Fina, Santiler has gained international recognition in recent years, although she has faced censorship in her home country due to the content of her songs.
In December 2025, she revealed having "many issues" with her song "Buen Provecho," which includes the line "In Cuba, we go hungry." Despite pressures to omit this verse during performances, she stood firm: "If I'm told I can't attend an event because of it, I simply won't go."
