A 43-year-old maintenance worker tragically lost his life after falling from the roof of Capitán San Luis Stadium in Pinar del Río while painting the sports facility.
This incident was reported on Sunday by the citizen alert platform NiO Reporting a Crime and was later confirmed by friends and family of the deceased through social media posts.
The victim was identified as Ernesto Roquez Valdez, affectionately known as "El Neo." Originally from the municipality of Mantua in Pinar del Río, he was living in the provincial capital at the time of the accident.
Tragic Fall Due to Structural Failure
According to accounts gathered by NiO Reporting a Crime, Ernesto's fall occurred when a section of the roof he was working on gave way. Despite being an experienced painter, the lack of safety measures contributed to this tragic event.
His remains were transported to the municipality of Sandino, where his parents and other relatives reside.
A Family's Heartbreaking Loss
One of the most heart-wrenching aspects of this tragedy is that Ernesto leaves behind young children who will grow up without their father.
The death of Ernesto deeply affected those who knew him. Tomas Ramos, a childhood friend, expressed his grief on Facebook: "I can't believe it, my brother. I'm left speechless. Rest in peace, my childhood friend. Fly high, Neo, you were one of the good ones."
Negligence and Lack of Safety Measures
Beyond the sorrow, the incident raises questions about potential severe negligence. Reports from NiO Reporting a Crime indicate that workers were performing their duties without proper safety equipment for working at heights, such as safety harnesses, lifelines, and fall protection systems.
"Even if a worker loses balance, slips, or makes any inadvertent mistake, it doesn't mean they should lose their life. Safety harnesses, lifelines, and other fall protection systems exist precisely to prevent tragedies like this," the platform emphasized.
The platform also directly questioned those in charge: "Who authorized these tasks without ensuring safety measures?"
Ongoing Pattern of Workplace Incidents
This accident highlights a troubling pattern of workplace incidents in Cuba, especially in maintenance and construction work. According to the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), 38 workers died in work-related accidents across the country in 2025, with the construction sector being the deadliest, accounting for 10 deaths.
In June, two Cubans died in another workplace accident under similar circumstances, and in March, a young man died after a severe fall in Santiago de Cuba. These incidents underscore a recurring pattern of preventable deaths due to the lack of safety measures.
So far, Cuban authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the accident or any ongoing investigation.
