Lorenzo López Opedra, a 28-year-old Cuban national, was taken into custody last Tuesday at Amelia Earhart Park in Hialeah, Florida. He faces charges of indecent exposure after being caught by an undercover officer, as reported by Univision 23.

The incident unfolded at 5:40 p.m. on October 13 in the park's wooded area, a popular spot for families, including children and the elderly, from the Miami-Dade region.

Details of the Arrest

According to the police report referenced by Univision 23, López Opedra encountered an undercover detective in the park's wooded area, exposed his genitals, and proceeded to engage in inappropriate touching.

The detective withdrew from the scene, contacted another officer by phone to describe the suspect, and this second officer coordinated with two uniformed officers to apprehend López Opedra at the location.

López Opedra is charged with indecent exposure, has been appointed a public defender, and had his bail set at $500.

Journalist Sorona Lacha from Univision 23 reported, “Lorenzo López's bail was set at $500, and his trial will commence in early November. We will be closely monitoring the proceedings.”

Community Concerns

Amelia Earhart Park, located at 401 Northeast 66th Street in Hialeah, spans approximately 515 acres with playgrounds, trails, and an interactive children's farm, making it one of the largest recreational spaces in Miami-Dade County.

Residents interviewed by Univision 23 expressed their discontent on camera.

“It's something everyone despises because nobody wants it to happen. It's a behavior that affects everyone,” one resident stated.

Another resident called for increased police presence: “More security, right? I mean, there is security, but just a little more reinforcement because, you know, this park is very large.”

A third individual emphasized the potential victims: “It's a park where many children of all ages walk, older people who also deserve respect, and women.”

Fourth Arrest This Year in the Same Park

This incident marks López Opedra as the fourth individual detained in 2026 for similar offenses at Amelia Earhart Park, raising concerns among local residents.

Univision 23 highlighted that “a few months ago, three individuals were arrested for the same type of offense, which is indecent exposure.”

In April 2026, three Cubans were detained in the same wooded area during an undercover operation by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office: Deibi Miguel Orpesa Martínez (27), Geriolsys Palenzuela Alcobre (49), and Dienil Camejo (61).

The police report from that operation noted that the three separately approached the undercover detective, exposed themselves, and engaged in acts of self-stimulation; each was also assigned a $500 bail.

The April report already identified that area of the park as a known spot for public sexual conduct, prompting repeated undercover operations throughout the year.

Florida's Legal Stance

Under Florida statute § 800.03, indecent exposure of sexual organs is classified as a first-degree misdemeanor for a first offense, punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000; repeat offenses escalate to a third-degree felony.

This isn't the only recent case involving Cubans arrested for similar conduct in Miami's metropolitan parks. In July, another Cuban was detained after a serious incident at Quail Roost Park in southwest Miami-Dade, where the victim was an 11-year-old girl, and bail was set at $7,500.

The trial for López Opedra, scheduled for early November, will determine if he faces the maximum penalty under state law.
