A 23-year-old Cuban man has been sentenced to seven years behind bars in Uruguay for drug trafficking after authorities discovered nearly 22 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the trunk of his car in Lagomar, Canelones.

The ruling was handed down on Tuesday, October 13, just one day following his arrest, as confirmed by Uruguay’s Ministry of the Interior and local media outlet Teledoce.

The arrest occurred on Monday, October 12, as part of Operation Roosevelt, a prolonged investigation targeting drug trafficking by Uruguayan authorities.

Details of the Arrest and Seizure

Law enforcement officers were conducting surveillance when they identified a car already linked to their investigation. Upon noticing the police presence, the driver attempted to flee, but was quickly apprehended.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered eight bricks and 24 half-bricks of cocaine, weighing a total of 21.865 kilograms. The officers also seized the vehicle and a mobile phone.

The identity of the detained individual has not been disclosed, and he reportedly has no prior criminal record.

Cocaine's High Market Value

Uruguay's Minister of the Interior, Carlos Negro, emphasized that the confiscated cocaine was of "quite high or very high purity" and estimated its value in the country’s illegal market at around $200,000.

Negro, accompanied by José Azambuya, the National Police Director, visited the Zone III Headquarters in Canelones to review the operation's findings.

Ongoing Investigation

Fabio Quevedo, the Canelones Police Chief, explained that the investigation remains open to uncover the full extent of the drug distribution network involved. Investigators are working to determine whether the shipment was intended solely for local distribution or if it was en route to Montevideo.

"We believe it was likely being transported to Montevideo," Quevedo stated, referencing one of the working theories.

In a related raid, police seized one kilogram of base paste and a firearm replica resembling a submachine gun.

Authorities indicated that Operation Roosevelt has already led to the formal charges and sentencing of other individuals involved in drug-related crimes.

Minister Negro highlighted the importance of following the trail of illegal profits in the fight against drug trafficking. "Tracking the money is what truly deters criminals from pursuing narcotrafficking," he stated.
