The Social Security Administration (SSA) revealed on Wednesday a 3.6% boost in benefits slated for 2027, impacting around 76 million individuals. This includes thousands of Cuban retirees living in Miami and other U.S. cities.

This cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), the largest since 2023, will result in an average increase of $75 per month in retirement benefits. However, the exact amount will vary based on each beneficiary's current benefits.

Official projections indicate that the average monthly benefit for retired workers will rise from $2,095 to $2,170, though the additional amount will depend on what each person currently receives.

For instance, someone currently getting $1,500 per month will see an increase of approximately $54, while those receiving $2,000 can expect about $72 more.

Despite the announced increase, the actual amount received in bank accounts might be less due to deductions for Medicare, taxes, or other applicable withholdings.

When Will Payments Reflect the Increase?

Nearly 72 million beneficiaries of Social Security for retirement, disability, or survivors will start seeing the increase from January 2027, which corresponds to the benefits of December 2026.

Conversely, around 7.3 million recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will receive their adjusted amount on December 31, 2026, as January 1 is a holiday.

The SSA clarified that some individuals receive benefits from both programs, so the total number of beneficiaries does not equate to the sum of those two figures.

No application or paperwork is required to receive the increase, as it will be applied automatically.

How to Determine the Increase in Your Check?

Beneficiaries who haven't opted for electronic notifications will receive a mailed notice in December, detailing their new monthly amount and any deductions.

Those with a "my Social Security" account can view this information from late November, up to three weeks before the postal notification arrives.

To access the document early, those without an account should create one and enable electronic notifications by November 18, 2026.

The 3.6% increase surpasses initial estimates of 3.4% and also exceeds the 2.8% adjustment applied in 2026.

According to the SSA's official formula, the new percentage is a response to inflation increases measured by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which was 3.6% higher in the third quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.

For Cuban retirees relying on these payments for essentials like food, housing, and medical care, the increase provides additional income, though its real impact will depend on rising expenses and deductions from each check.
