This Wednesday, the Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport in Varadero welcomed the inaugural shipment of humanitarian aid from the United States aimed at Matanzas. This aid will support over 18,000 vulnerable families by providing essential food and hygiene products.

Caritas Cuba reported that the aid was received by Bishop Juan Gabriel Díaz Ruiz of Matanzas, alongside María de los Ángeles Castelo Elías Calles, the director of Caritas in the province.

The initial distribution will assist 700 out of the 2,100 families chosen in the Vicaría Nuestra Señora de la Caridad. This includes areas such as Unión de Reyes, Bolondrón, Güira, Alacranes, Bermejas, and Cabezas, among others.

Overall, 18,200 household groups within the diocese are set to receive packages containing basic food staples and vital personal hygiene items.

Caritas volunteers have pre-identified the beneficiaries, focusing on seniors over 60, individuals with disabilities, those with chronic illnesses, pregnant and nursing mothers, and children under five, particularly those facing challenges in accessing food and water.

The distribution occurs without the involvement of the Cuban government. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) purchases these goods in the U.S. and sends them to Cuba, where Caritas handles direct distribution through its parish network and home visits.

This shipment is part of a $100 million humanitarian aid initiative announced by Washington, which has already reached various Cuban provinces.

On October 6, Caritas provided aid to 300 families in Camagüey, while Ciego de Ávila received 700 food packages and 700 hygiene kits. Supplies also reached Pinar del Río, with distribution starting on October 10.

The program aims to benefit between 100,000 and 120,000 families across Cuba, amidst a severe crisis characterized by food shortages, limited access to water, and the decline of basic services.

"We will distribute this aid from a perspective of faith; we go in Christ's name to reveal the face of a merciful God," stated Bishop Díaz Ruiz.
