Dollar and Euro Surge in Cuba: Today's Exchange Rates

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 by Oscar Guevara

As of 10:00 a.m. local time in Cuba, the informal currency exchange market opened with a noticeable upward trend on this Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The U.S. dollar has climbed to an average of 793 pesos, while the euro has risen to 888 pesos. Meanwhile, the MLC stands around 551 pesos, although this figure should be considered as a rough estimate due to the limited volume of transactions supporting it.

Current Exchange Rates Overview

The exchange rate for the dollar (USD) to Cuban peso (CUP) is 793 CUP. The euro (EUR) to CUP rate is 888 CUP. The MLC to CUP is approximately 551 CUP (indicative value). This morning's start confirms an ongoing trend that places significant pressure on the Cuban peso against foreign currencies.

Dollar's Upward Movement

The U.S. dollar is averaging 793 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, with buying at 790 CUP and selling at 795 CUP. This marks an increase of 5 pesos compared to the previous day, when the rate was 788 CUP.

Looking at a weekly perspective, the dollar has gained 25 pesos from 768 CUP a week ago, a 3.3% rise. Over the past 30 days, the dollar has increased by 98.5 pesos from 694 CUP recorded then. It's important to note that this variation might partially reflect methodological adjustments in the index.

In the last month, the dollar reached a peak of 793 CUP — today's value — and a low of 694 CUP.

Euro's Rise and Dominance

The euro is valued at 888 Cuban pesos (CUP) on average, with buying at 885 CUP and selling at 891 CUP. This represents a 3-peso increase from the previous session when it was at 885 CUP.

Over the past week, the euro has risen by 24 pesos from 864 CUP, a 2.8% increase. In a 30-day span, the euro sits 95 pesos higher than the 793 CUP of that period, with potential index methodology adjustments included.

Its highest point in the last month was 889 CUP, and the lowest was 792 CUP. The euro surpasses the dollar by 95 pesos, solidifying its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

MLC's Indicative Value Due to Low Volume

The MLC averages around 551 Cuban pesos (CUP), with buying at 500 CUP and selling at 601 CUP. This figure should be approached cautiously due to the low transaction volume reported during this time.

Compared to the previous day, the MLC has risen 23 pesos from 528 CUP, a 4.4% increase. However, in the past week, it has dropped 47.5 pesos from 598 CUP a week ago. Over the last 30 days, it fluctuated between a high of 603 CUP and a low of 446 CUP.

Widening Gap with Official Exchange Rate

The official exchange rate from the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) remains at 707 CUP per dollar and 791 CUP per euro, significantly below the rates observed in the informal currency market.

The gap between the official and informal rates is now 86 pesos for the dollar and 97 pesos for the euro. Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate continues to fall short of meeting the real foreign currency demand of the population.

In the past month, the official dollar rate increased from 655 to 707 CUP, while in the informal market, it surged from 694 to 793 CUP. This demonstrates that the gap remains structurally open rather than closing.

The disparity between the official and informal rates highlights the persistent shortage of foreign currency in the state banking system and the high demand for dollars and euros among the population, whether for emigration, importing goods, protecting savings, or making private sector purchases.

Methodology

The CiberCuba Exchange Rate is an index of the Cuban informal market created from the automated analysis of thousands of currency exchange posts in Telegram and Facebook groups. The calculation discards atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each operation based on its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.

Understanding the Cuban Parallel Market

What causes the gap between official and informal exchange rates in Cuba?

The gap is primarily due to the scarcity of foreign currency in the state banking system and the high demand for dollars and euros for various uses, including emigration, imports, and savings protection.

Why is the euro more expensive than the dollar in the parallel market?

The euro's higher price is due to its increased demand and its status as a dominant currency in the parallel market, surpassing the dollar's exchange rate by a significant margin.

How often are the exchange rates updated in the informal market?

Exchange rates in the informal market are updated several times a day, based on the automated analysis of currency exchange posts in social media groups.
