Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has taken a strong stance against Donald Trump's recent move to remove sanctions on Russian fuel, labeling it a "betrayal" to the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Pence is demanding that the current president immediately revoke the diesel agreement made with Vladimir Putin.

In a Facebook post, Pence expressed his disapproval: "President Trump's decision to lift sanctions on Russian fuel amidst Putin's ongoing brutal attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine is senseless and a betrayal to the legacy and leadership of the late Senator Lindsey Graham."

On Friday, October 9, Trump announced a deal with his Russian counterpart to bring millions of tons of diesel from Russia into the U.S. and international markets, aiming to alleviate high fuel prices.

Inconsistencies with Recent Legislation

Pence's critique highlights the inconsistency of Trump's actions, as just three weeks prior, on September 18, Trump signed the "Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026." This bipartisan legislation, passed by both the Senate and the House, authorizes tariffs of up to 500% on Russian goods. The law honors the late South Carolina Senator, who passed away in July at 71 and was a staunch advocate for Ukraine in Congress.

"Instead of enforcing the tough sanctions that Lindsey Graham fought to enact until his last breath, President Trump has announced that the U.S. will lift sanctions on Russian energy, thereby fueling Putin's war machine," Pence stated.

Pence's Firsthand Experience in Ukraine

Drawing from his recent visit to Ukraine in September, Pence argued, "As I witnessed firsthand in Ukraine last month, Putin is losing this war. Ukraine has stalled the Russian army and has innovated warfare with drones, bringing the fight into the heart of Russia."

He emphasized that Putin continues his terrorist war against Ukraine's civilian population, where innocent lives are lost daily, and stressed that the U.S. should not extend a lifeline to Russia's military efforts.

Strategic Consequences for U.S. National Security

The Republican politician warned of the strategic consequences for U.S. national security, stating, "If Putin subdues Ukraine, it will only be a matter of time before the Russian army crosses a border and our troops have to confront them."

Pence concluded his statement with a direct plea to the president: "This agreement should be rescinded immediately, returning to the firm policies of our four years in the White House, imposing severe sanctions on any nation purchasing Russian energy, and working with our allies to ensure that Ukraine has the military support it needs to repel and defeat this Russian invasion once and for all."

Pence's reaction aligns with a bipartisan wave of opposition to the diesel agreement with Russia: seven senators from both parties, including Republicans Collins, Murkowski, Tillis, and Curtis, have demanded that Trump "immediately reverse" the decision.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the agreement as "unfair and dishonest," describing it as a "birthday gift" for Putin. Zelensky also accused Trump of negotiating with Moscow behind Kiev's back while Ukrainian and American delegations were discussing the war in Miami.

Understanding the Implications of Trump's Russian Fuel Deal

What is the nature of Trump's agreement with Putin regarding Russian fuel?

Trump's agreement with Putin involves incorporating millions of tons of Russian diesel into the U.S. and international markets, ostensibly to address high fuel prices.

Why did Pence label Trump's decision as a betrayal?

Pence described it as a betrayal because it contradicts the bipartisan sanctions law named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, undermining efforts to penalize Russia for its actions in Ukraine.

How has Ukraine's President responded to the fuel agreement?

President Zelensky has criticized the deal, calling it "unfair and dishonest," and suggesting it was like a gift to Putin while accusing Trump of negotiating without Ukraine's knowledge.
