A daring escape unfolded in Doral, Miami-Dade, when a man managed to evade an armed kidnapping by tossing $4,000 in cash into some bushes, distracting his captors during a Facebook Marketplace iPhone transaction, according to the victim's account reported to the police.

The dramatic incident took place on Friday, October 9, and culminated in the arrest of a 31-year-old Miami Gardens resident, accused of involvement in the crime, as reported by WSVN 7News on Monday, citing police documents.

Initially, the victim had bought a phone from the arrested individual on September 28 without any issues. When offered additional iPhones, the victim agreed to meet again near his apartment building, but this time was asked to go to the rear of the property.

Upon approaching a white BMW with two men inside, one suspect, who had been lying in the back seat, suddenly sat up and pointed a gun at the victim's head.

Hostage Situation and Escape

The men coerced the victim into the car, with the armed man pressing the gun against the victim's hip. "We want everything you have; we want your money; we want your business," one of the attackers demanded, according to the police report.

The victim's initial attempt to escape was thwarted as both men restrained him and forced him back into the vehicle. One suspect even threatened his life.

During a second escape attempt, the victim threw the $4,000 intended for the phone purchase into nearby bushes. As the armed suspect exited the BMW to retrieve the cash, the victim struggled free, breaking a strap from a bag tangled around his neck.

He ultimately succeeded in escaping, taking refuge among the greenery near a business, fearful of his captors' return.

Investigation and Arrest

Hours later, the victim received a threatening text message warning against reporting the incident. Detectives identified the suspect through the phone number used for transaction coordination and vehicle records, according to the police report. The arrest occurred on Sunday during a stop on State Road 826.

The suspect faces charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, grand theft, and interfering with a victim or witness. A judge found probable cause to proceed with the case and ordered the suspect to be held without bail. This decision does not imply guilt.

WSVN's report did not include comments from the accused or his legal defense regarding the charges.

Risks of Online Transactions

This case is reminiscent of other robberies linked to online transactions in South Florida. In May 2026, four individuals were arrested in Miami-Dade for their suspected involvement in at least 11 robberies and six grand thefts, mainly targeting phone sellers contacted through digital platforms.

In light of these dangers, authorities advise conducting transactions in designated safe exchange zones located at official facilities, avoiding isolated areas, and bringing companions when possible.

The current information does not specify whether authorities have identified or located the second suspect.
