In the early hours of Monday morning, a silver BMW overturned on the Palmetto Expressway in Miami Lakes while trying to evade the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officers who were attempting to stop it for speeding, according to official reports from the agency.

The crash resulted in three individuals being hospitalized and a police cruiser being damaged.

Details of the High-Speed Chase

Local media reports indicate that the incident began around 4:13 a.m. when FHP officers attempted to pull over the BMW traveling southbound on State Road 826, near Northwest 47th Avenue. The driver ignored the stop signal and sped away.

Lieutenant Alejandro Camacho, FHP spokesperson, confirmed the sequence of events in an official statement referenced by the Miami Herald. The driver attempted to exit onto Northwest 154th Street but lost control due to excessive speed.

The BMW veered off the roadway, rolled down an embankment, hit a drainage culvert, and overturned.

Condition of the Injured and the Damaged Patrol Car

The three occupants of the BMW were transported to a local hospital. Camacho stated they received medical treatment for "non-life-threatening injuries." During the pursuit, an FHP patrol car also went down the embankment and collided with the BMW, as reported by Telemundo 51. The officer driving the patrol unit emerged unscathed.

Local 10 News broadcasted live from the scene, detailing the aftermath. "We've been here for the last 20 minutes watching this BMW behind me that overturned from the highway down an embankment. You can see they already have that vehicle on the ramp, but they've been working below the embankment to flip that car," a reporter stated. "Three people were taken to the hospital due to this crash. This happened on the ramp from Miami Lakes Boulevard onto the Palmetto. That ramp is currently closed," she added.

Pending Criminal Charges and High-Risk Zone

The identities of the BMW's occupants have not been released by the FHP, but they did indicate that "criminal charges are expected," as reported by the Miami Herald. Responding to the scene alongside the FHP were the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The Palmetto Expressway is one of the most heavily trafficked routes in Miami-Dade County, stretching nearly 30 miles and connecting Miami Lakes with Hialeah and other areas in the metropolitan region. The location of the incident has been the site of several recent accidents, including a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on the expressway last September.

In recent months, this same highway was the scene of another Miami-Dade police chase, which ended in the arrest of a suspect who had stolen a vehicle from Hialeah's Palmetto General Hospital.

The FHP's pursuit policy, updated in January 2026, mandates that officers assess whether a pursuit is "objectively reasonable" based on road conditions, traffic, visibility, and the speed of the fleeing vehicle, and requires immediate notification to the regional communications center.
