A Cuban woman named Sisi Aguilera (@sisi_aguilera) has taken to TikTok to spotlight the harsh reality of trying to eat adequately in Cuba. Her message underscores the staggering prices of basic goods and the inadequate wages and pensions that many Cubans must endure.
"Each day, the harshness of our reality becomes more apparent. Every trip to buy food leaves you feeling heartbroken. The Cuban people are starving," Aguilera stated at the beginning of a video she uploaded in early October.
In her video, Aguilera highlights the exorbitant cost of essential items: a bag of rice priced at 950 Cuban pesos (CUP), with some places charging up to 1,000 pesos. She also shows root vegetables priced at 300 pesos for just over a pound, and a piece of meat costing more than 3,000 pesos.
The Unbearable Cost of Living
One of the most alarming stories she shares is of her 80-year-old neighbor who receives a meager monthly pension of 2,000 pesos. This amount is insufficient to even purchase the piece of meat Aguilera showcases in her video.
"If she slices it into strips, it might last three or four days, yet it costs over three thousand pesos. How can this elderly woman manage to afford a piece of meat with her pension of just two thousand pesos?" Aguilera questioned.
Struggling to Survive
"Meat is out of reach for the average Cuban. We are living worse than animals. Nobody cares, nobody acts. Prices keep rising, the dollar keeps climbing, yet wages remain stagnant," Aguilera lamented.
Adding to the struggle is the soaring cost of food and the difficulty in obtaining essential products, forcing many families to cut back on purchases, substitute food items, or rely on assistance from relatives and others.
Aguilera wrapped up her video by urging her followers to contemplate the high food prices and the daily challenges Cubans face just to get by.
"Share your thoughts in the comments on these prices and the survival tactics we Cubans are adopting. What do you think could be the solution?" she implored.
Understanding Cuba's Economic Challenges
Why are food prices so high in Cuba?
The high cost of food in Cuba is largely due to economic mismanagement, inflation, and a reliance on imports which are subject to international market fluctuations.
How do low pensions affect the elderly in Cuba?
Low pensions severely limit the purchasing power of the elderly, making it difficult for them to afford basic necessities such as food, medicine, and utilities.
What can be done to improve the situation in Cuba?
Addressing Cuba's economic woes requires comprehensive policy reforms, greater economic freedom, and international support to stabilize the financial system and improve living conditions.
