Marco Rubio Advocates for a Generational Shift in Europe from Athens

Wednesday, October 7, 2026 by Claire Jimenez

Speaking from Athens, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for a "generational shift" in Europe, emphasizing the need for increased defense spending, industrial growth, and the restoration of national sovereignty.

Rubio delivered his remarks on the historic Pnyx Hill, a site known for hosting the assembly of ancient Athens, with the Acropolis and the Parthenon serving as a symbolic backdrop.

"Across this continent, we are witnessing what we hope marks the start of a generational change: a significant rise in defense budgets, the formation of new alliances, and a surge in manufacturing and production," Rubio declared.

The U.S. diplomat drew on the political and cultural legacy of classical Greece to advocate for enhanced economic, military, and technological capabilities for the United States and its European allies.

"Under President Trump's leadership, America has made a resolute choice. We have committed to reclaiming control over our critical supply chains, revitalizing our economy, rebuilding our defense, and striving for dominance in future technologies and industries," Rubio stated.

He criticized what he described as decades of Western decline, characterized by deindustrialization, loss of control over supply chains, and increasing reliance on external sources.

"Over time, we became ashamed of what made us exceptional. Our prosperity somehow turned into a source of guilt," Rubio noted.

A Call to Courage and Resilience

Rubio also invoked the Greek concept of thumos, which relates to courage, passion, and pride, warning of the dangers of losing these vital qualities.

"Without thumos, nations lose the will to fight, to strive, and ultimately, to survive," he asserted.

The speech took place during the sixth round of the U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue, focusing on defense, security, energy, technology, trade, and investment.

During the dialogue, it was announced that Greece would receive $4 billion to support a long-term defense plan aimed at enhancing military interoperability between the two nations.

Rubio emphasized Greece's strategic importance as a U.S. ally in Europe, highlighting cooperative efforts in defense, energy, regional security, and migration control.

He also referenced a recent agreement signed on September 22 between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland to bolster Arctic security. This pact expands U.S. military access and includes potential missile defense capabilities linked to the Golden Dome system in Greenland.

Rubio presented this agreement as evidence of how Washington and European allies can forge partnerships that simultaneously advance national interests and collective security.

In closing, Rubio positioned the Western world at a crucial juncture, describing it as a defining moment.

"We stand at a turning point, not just in the history of my nation but in the fate of our entire civilization. The threats we face today are as tangible as those that loomed over ancient theaters of conflict," Rubio concluded.
