Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a warning on Wednesday about the eastern side of Tropical Storm Isaias, describing it as the "dirty side" of the storm. This section of the cyclone could significantly impact the Panhandle region, as the storm continues to gain strength in the Gulf of Mexico.

In posts shared on his X profile, DeSantis mentioned that his administration is bracing for Isaias to make landfall in the Mobile-Pensacola area as a Category 3 hurricane. He emphasized the importance of preparing for a more severe scenario, even if the storm eventually makes landfall with less intensity.

The governor explained that the eastern part of the storm, anticipated to be expansive, is poised to deliver significant effects across northwestern Florida.

His warning aligns with recent updates from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), which highlighted a growing risk of hurricane-force winds in parts of the Panhandle, southern Alabama, and southern Mississippi.

The NHC has also issued a hurricane watch from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to Indian Pass, Florida, alongside a storm surge watch from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Yankeetown, Florida. The agency has cautioned about the potential for heavy rains, flash flooding, and urban flooding as the system advances towards the northern Gulf Coast.

Earlier, the NHC indicated that Isaias was gaining momentum and could become the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season. Projections suggest that the storm might reach wind speeds of 75 mph by Thursday and continue to intensify on Friday as it nears the coast.

In response to the looming threat, Florida has activated preparation measures. DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 25 counties across the northern and northwestern parts of the state. Additionally, authorities have set up a platform for reporting price gouging of essential goods and services during the emergency.

With these developments, the governor's message is clear: it is unwise to rely on wind shear to weaken the system before impact. The official recommendation is to prepare for a major hurricane and adhere to local authorities' guidance.

Key Concerns About Hurricane Isaias' Impact

Why is the eastern side of Hurricane Isaias considered the "dirty side"?

The eastern side of a hurricane is often called the "dirty side" because it typically has stronger winds, more rain, and a higher likelihood of tornadoes. This side can cause more damage and impact a larger area.

What preparations are being made in Florida for Hurricane Isaias?

In anticipation of Hurricane Isaias, Governor DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 25 counties and implemented measures to prevent price gouging on essential goods and services. Residents are urged to follow local authorities' instructions and prepare for a potential Category 3 hurricane.

What areas are under hurricane and storm surge watches?

A hurricane watch has been issued from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to Indian Pass, Florida. Additionally, a storm surge watch is in effect from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Yankeetown, Florida, indicating potential coastal flooding.
