Florida's Governor, Ron DeSantis, announced a state of emergency on Tuesday for 25 counties due to the looming threat of Tropical Depression Nine, which has formed in the southwest Gulf of Mexico. This system has the potential to intensify into a hurricane by the end of the week.

Through Executive Order 26-202, the state of emergency facilitates the preemptive mobilization of emergency resources to tackle potential impacts in the northern and northwestern regions of the state.

"I have signed an Executive Order declaring a state of emergency due to the potential impacts of Tropical Depression 9. This order enables Florida’s Division of Emergency Management to deploy critical preparedness resources and ensure Florida is ready to respond," stated DeSantis.

The governor also urged residents to use this time to finalize their emergency plans and ensure their hurricane supply kits are fully stocked.

"Floridians should utilize this period to establish emergency plans and make sure their hurricane supply kits are complete," he emphasized.

Potential Hurricane by Thursday

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasts a sustained strengthening of the system, which could transform into a tropical storm by early Wednesday—earning the name Isaias—and potentially escalate to hurricane status by Thursday.

The projected path is expected to take it north of the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday and subsequently towards the northern Gulf Coast of the United States, possibly approaching by Friday. The NHC has advised residents in this area to closely monitor the system’s developments due to remaining uncertainties about its path and final intensity.

Florida Prepares Resources

The State Emergency Response Team (SERT) of Florida has initiated the strategic mobilization of resources, positioning them in Tallahassee and the Santa Rosa area for rapid deployment if necessary.

The prepared supplies include generators, fuel, flood barriers, drinking water, non-perishable food, tarps, and sandbags.

The governor's office warned that potential effects could extend well beyond the cyclone’s landfall center, including heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding, and isolated tornadoes in northern Florida.

Authorities are also monitoring flood risks, as recent rains have already saturated soils in some areas.

Counties Under Emergency Declaration

The 25 counties affected by the declaration are Baker, Bay, Calhoun, Columbia, Dixie, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Gulf, Hamilton, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Suwannee, Taylor, Walton, Wakulla, and Washington.

Initially, the NHC reported no active coastal watches or warnings but recommended that those on the northern Gulf Coast stay updated with forthcoming advisories.

Florida had been monitoring the situation even before the depression's formation, following meteorological alerts about the potential development of the system in the Gulf.

Meanwhile, Cuba's INSMET indicated that Tropical Depression Nine poses no direct threat to the island but will continue to track its progress as it moves through the Gulf.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially remains active until November 30, 2026.
