The informal currency market in Cuba witnessed an unexpected turn on Monday as both the U.S. dollar and the euro saw declines, while the MLC (Freely Convertible Currency) experienced a significant surge, albeit with limited data available to support this movement.
According to the informal exchange rates in Cuba, by 8:00 PM local time, the U.S. dollar stood at 770 Cuban pesos (CUP), the euro fell to 872 CUP, and the MLC hovered around 578 CUP.
The Dollar's Unexpected Retreat
The dollar dropped 15 pesos in a single day, having closed at 785 CUP on Sunday. Despite Monday's fall, its weekly trend remains upward; a week ago, it was valued at 745 CUP, marking a 25-peso increase over that period.
Looking at a 30-day comparison, the dollar was at 683 CUP a month ago, compared to today's 770 CUP. During this time, it fluctuated between a low of 683 CUP and a high of 785 CUP.
Euro's Modest Decline
The euro also saw a decrease on Monday, dropping from 879 to 872 CUP, a slide of 7 pesos. Nevertheless, it remains 102 pesos higher than the dollar.
Over the past week, the European currency has gained 22 pesos, up from the 850 CUP recorded a week prior. Over the last 30 days, it has ranged from a low of 775 CUP to a high of 885 CUP.
MLC's Strong Performance
The most notable movement of the day belonged to the MLC, which jumped from 532 to approximately 578 CUP, a 46-peso increase, equivalent to about an 8.6% rise.
Current rates are as follows: U.S. Dollar (USD): 770 CUP. Euro (EUR): 872 CUP. MLC: 578 CUP. The informal exchange remains above the official rates set by the Central Bank of Cuba for Segment III, which are 695 CUP per dollar and 783 CUP per euro.
This leaves a disparity of 75 pesos per dollar and 89 pesos per euro between the informal market and the official exchange rate.
Although Monday's decline provides some relief following a period of sharp increases, the underlying trend continues to show pressure on the Cuban peso. In just 30 days, the dollar has gained 87 pesos against the CUP.

Understanding Cuba's Currency Market Fluctuations

The decline could be influenced by several factors, including market speculation, changes in supply and demand, and external economic pressures.
What is the MLC and why did it rise sharply?
The MLC is a Freely Convertible Currency used in certain transactions in Cuba. Its sharp rise may be due to increased demand or limited availability, though specific data is sparse.
How does the informal market impact Cuba's economy?
The informal market affects the economy by creating parallel exchange rates, which can influence inflation, purchasing power, and economic stability.
