A tragic incident unfolded on October 2 in the rural area of Merceditas, Cárdenas, Matanzas, where 58-year-old Nilda Díaz Santana lost her life. She was attempting to protect her daughter from an assault by the daughter's former partner, as confirmed by the Observatorio de Género de Alas Tensas (OGAT).
This independent organization, which monitors gender-based violence in Cuba, has recorded Nilda's death as the 57th femicide reported in the country in the year 2026.
According to OGAT, the alleged assailant, who had a history of violence against Nilda's daughter, forcefully entered the family home armed, with the apparent intent to harm her.
The observatory gathered its information from family and community sources, noting that Nilda was killed while protecting her daughter during the violent attack. The daughter sustained injuries, and other family members were also impacted by the incident.
OGAT reports that the suspected perpetrator surrendered to the police on the same day as the attack.
The organization expressed its condolences to Nilda's family, wishing a speedy recovery to her injured daughter and the other affected relatives.
The case was initially shared on social media by communicator Christian Arbolaez on Facebook. He recounted Nilda's courageous act when she intervened to shield her daughter from danger.
Arbolaez detailed the ensuing uncertainty, revealing that the suspect was on the run for several hours before being located by his own son on a farm and subsequently handed over to the authorities, thus ending the search for his whereabouts.
Community Reacts to Nilda's Death
Nilda's death sparked widespread grief and outrage on social media. Individuals identifying as her family or friends highlighted her role as a devoted mother and grandmother.
The use of a firearm in the attack raised many questions among those responding to the news.
“Where are these firearms coming from? It's becoming too common to take another person's life,” one individual questioned.
“Another incident involving a gun. How is this happening?” asked another.
The reactions indicated growing concern over the presence of firearms in violent acts and the deteriorating security situation in Cuba.
According to the Observatorio Cubano de Auditoría Ciudadana (OCAC), the number of documented murders in Cuba surged by 42.9% during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, rising from 63 to 90 cases. The report also highlighted an increase in the lethality of these crimes.
Rising Femicide Rates in Cuba
With Nilda Díaz Santana's case, OGAT recorded a total of 57 femicides in Cuba by October 5, 2026.
The observatory also documented 27 attempted femicides and two murders of men associated with gender-based violence.
This figure had previously climbed to 56 following the confirmation of Idania Castillo Sacre's murder in Artemisa, allegedly killed by her ex-partner, a man previously convicted of murdering another woman in 2010.
OGAT continues to investigate additional cases and has called for access to official information to clarify several deaths and assaults that could be added to their records.
