Understanding Cuba's Currency Dynamics
Why is the U.S. dollar climbing in the Cuban market?
The surge in the U.S. dollar value in Cuba's informal market is primarily driven by economic instability, inflation, and a lack of confidence in the local currency.
How does the official exchange rate compare to the informal market?
The official exchange rate from the Central Bank of Cuba is significantly lower than the rates in the informal market, reflecting a substantial divergence between government controls and real-world trading values.
What impact does the rising dollar have on the Cuban economy?
The increasing dollar value makes imports more expensive and exacerbates economic challenges for Cubans, leading to higher prices for goods and services.
