The Dutch organization, Stichting Cuba Adelante, recently sent a significant shipment of 11 containers filled with educational materials and medical supplies from the Netherlands to institutions in the Cuban municipalities of Holguín, Banes, and Moa, as reported by the state-run newspaper ¡Ahora! on Saturday.

This generous donation was coordinated through the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP). Lupe Isabel Fernández Ramírez, the ICAP delegate in Holguín, publicly expressed gratitude for the assistance and emphasized the importance of international support given Cuba’s current socio-economic challenges.

The distributed resources have been allocated to various schools, hospitals, orphanages, homes for the elderly, and the pediatric hospital within the province, according to the media outlet.

Leaders from Stichting Cuba Adelante personally traveled to Holguín to oversee the delivery of these essential materials to the intended beneficiaries.

Humanitarian Efforts by Stichting Cuba Adelante

Founded around 2015, Stichting Cuba Adelante focuses on humanitarian cooperation projects, primarily in the fields of education and public health. Their shipments typically include wheelchairs, walkers, hygiene items, mattresses, hospital equipment, and school and office supplies.

The organization also has the capability to send goods to official Cuban institutions without import taxes, which greatly facilitates the delivery of these much-needed resources to public services in the province, the source explained.

Holguín's Ongoing Crisis

The arrival of these supplies comes at a critical time for Holguín, which has started the 2026-2027 school year with a shortage of over 2,000 teachers, 524 schools damaged by Hurricane Melissa—157 of which remain unrepaired as classes begin—and a uniform production that covers only 60% for prioritized grades.

In the health sector, the province is battling active Aedes aegypti mosquito breeding sites and a resurgence of dengue fever, compounded by a chronic shortage of medical supplies.

This shipment adds to the recent international aid received by the province. In late September, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) donated 50 fumigation machines to bolster dengue control efforts.

Additionally, the European Union is financing the ECHO SÍFILIS project with approximately two million euros to detect sexually transmitted infections in pregnant women, adolescents, and newborns.

The influx of international donations to Holguín highlights the deep-seated deficiencies that the Cuban government has failed to address, a consequence of decades of centralized management and an ever-worsening economic crisis.
