Residents of Miami have a unique opportunity this weekend to collect free mango, avocado, lychee, and other tree species as part of a city initiative aimed at distributing hundreds of these plants over the weekend of October 3rd and 4th.

The program plans to distribute a total of 600 fruit trees, flowering plants, and shrubs across six events held from Friday to Sunday in various city districts. This was announced by the City of Miami on their official Tree Give-Aways page.

Two distributions occurred on Friday. For Saturday, two more are scheduled, and the program will conclude on Sunday with the final events.

Where to Find Free Trees in Miami This Saturday

The first distribution on Saturday, October 3rd, will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Kirk Munroe Park, located at 3101 Florida Ave., Miami, FL 33133, serving District 2.

The second giveaway will occur from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the District 3 office in Little Havana, located at 1300 SW 12th Ave., Miami, FL 33129.

Sunday's Tree Distribution Continues

For those unable to attend on Saturday, two additional opportunities are available on Sunday, October 4th.

From 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., trees will be distributed at Douglas Park, 2755 SW 37th Ave., Miami, FL 33133, in District 4.

The final session will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Athalie Range Park, 525 NW 62nd St., Miami, FL 33150, within District 5.

Available Tree Species: Mangoes, Avocados, and More

The city has announced a variety of species for the fall distribution, including mango, avocado, carambola, and lychee, along with Geiger trees, White Cordia, bougainvillea, and small-leaf clusia.

The specific availability of each species may vary by location and inventory, meaning not all types will be present at every site.

Eligibility for Free Trees

To qualify for a free tree, individuals must reside within the City of Miami boundaries, which is distinct from simply living in Miami-Dade County.

Proof of residence is required at the event. While the official page for this fall's event does not specify which documents are acceptable, it is advisable to bring clear evidence of your residential address.

Pre-registration for these events closed on Friday, October 2nd, at 10:00 a.m. The City of Miami states that those who registered in advance will be given priority during the distribution.

Trees are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, those who did not pre-register should be aware that availability is not guaranteed.

Why Miami is Distributing Free Trees

This initiative is part of the city's efforts to increase tree coverage and create more shaded areas in neighborhoods.

These efforts are linked to the Miami Forever Climate Ready: Extreme Heat plan, which identifies expanding tree coverage on both municipal and community lands as a strategy to reduce residents' exposure to extreme heat.

The City of Miami regularly organizes these giveaways in its five districts to encourage residents to plant trees on their properties.

Those planning to attend this weekend are advised to check for updated information on Miami's free tree program, as the distribution is subject to availability.
