Tragically, a 37-year-old Cuban named Luis Ángel Rodríguez Guillén lost his life after being stabbed on Saturday night during a confrontation at a shipyard in Guyana. The altercation involved another Cuban national who also worked and lived at the location, as reported by the Guyana Police.
The incident, covered by Demerara Waves, took place at around 11:00 p.m. on September 26 in Land of Canaan, located along the eastern bank of the Demerara River.
According to police information, Rodríguez Guillén and a 32-year-old compatriot, both employed at the shipyard, engaged in a heated argument that escalated into a physical fight.
During the dispute, it is alleged that the 32-year-old man grabbed a knife and fatally stabbed Rodríguez Guillén in the chest. The victim collapsed in the corridor of the workers' living quarters.
Other employees quickly intervened, subduing the suspect before handing him over to the authorities. "He was arrested and remains in police custody," the Police stated.
Investigators have also retrieved the knife believed to have been used in the fatal attack.
Rodríguez Guillén was immediately taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where medical professionals declared him deceased. His body was later transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for an autopsy.
This incident once again highlights the violent episodes involving members of the Cuban community in Guyana. In August, three Cubans were remanded in custody over the murder of a fellow Cuban on July 22 in Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
Several other Cubans have met violent deaths in the country over the past two years, including José Aurelio Ramírez, who was stabbed in April 2025; Pedro Alexander Frometa Slonchak, shot by a security guard in August 2025; Ariel Betancourt Ramírez, stabbed during an apparent robbery in December 2025; Dainier Vegas Infante, shot at his workplace in May 2026; and Wilber Fonseca Fonseca, found deceased beside a road in June 2026.
In August, representatives of the Cuban community voiced concerns, claiming they have become "prime targets for crime" in Guyana following several violent incidents against migrants from the island.
