A privately owned restaurant in Cienfuegos turned to social media to track down a group of patrons after discovering an inadvertent overcharge of 7,000 Cuban pesos, which they wanted to return.

Rancho Cristal, a dining spot located in La Milpa, posted a notice on Facebook on Saturday aiming to reach a group of seven or eight individuals who had been seated at one of their tables that day.

"We need to return money that we mistakenly overcharged. Please accept our apologies for the error in the bill," the restaurant stated.

The dilemma was that the establishment had no direct contact information for the customers to notify them.

The owner, known as Mandy, elaborated in the comments that his staff felt embarrassed about the incident, but he emphasized the importance of acknowledging the mistake and making amends.

"The discrepancy amounts to 7,000 pesos. We don’t have their phone number, and the staff feels bad about it. I explained that anyone can make a mistake, but it’s essential to own up to it and make it right," he wrote.

Rancho Cristal also shared a phone number for the customers to connect with the restaurant and retrieve their money.

The gesture garnered numerous appreciative comments on Facebook.

"Honesty is invaluable, and it’s rare to find such integrity these days," one user noted.

Another customer shared a similar experience at the same restaurant. She recounted that after dining with her husband, they were contacted by the establishment to inform them of an overpayment.

"They called us to return the money, which we decided to leave as a tip for the staff. They are undoubtedly the best in Cienfuegos," she declared.

Such acts of integrity are not unheard of in Cuba. In August 2025, a vendor from Isla de la Juventud also used social media to locate a customer who had overpaid for an item and return the excess amount.

In a climate characterized by high prices and economic challenges facing Cubans, the restaurant's initiative was celebrated for the simple yet significant act of recognizing a mistake before the affected parties raised an issue.

"To err is human, to correct is wise," one user concluded.
