Aidyl Alfonso, a Cuban resident, made an urgent plea on Facebook on Saturday following the tragic death of her father, Antonio Infante Ajete, who was struck by a vehicle on Friday in La Lisa, a municipality in Havana.
Alfonso reported that the driver involved in the accident fled the scene without providing any assistance.
The incident occurred near the ETECSA office in La Lisa, a well-known landmark in the area of the Cuban capital.
The victim's daughter is appealing for help from anyone who may have been present at the time of the accident: "If you were in the vicinity and noticed the car's model, recall any numbers from the license plate, or have any detail that might help identify the responsible party, please contact me privately."
She also urged people to share her post widely to reach potential witnesses, ending her message with a heartfelt request: "Any information, no matter how small, will be appreciated."
The post was accompanied by a photograph of Antonio Infante Ajete, a middle-aged man.
These tragic incidents are not uncommon in Cuba, where drivers often flee after causing fatal accidents, and families turn to social media as the only immediate tool to seek out witnesses, given the lack of prompt institutional responses.
In April 2025, a woman tragically lost her life in a suspected hit-and-run in Punta Brava, also located in the municipality of La Lisa.
Other similar incidents were reported that year: a cyclist was fatally struck in Havana in April, and another lost their life in the Lawton neighborhood in May, both involving drivers who fled the scene.
In August 2025, the community in Majagua, Ciego de Ávila, also turned to social platforms in an attempt to identify the driver responsible for the death of an elderly man in a road accident.
Traffic accidents continue to claim lives across Cuba every year. According to the National Commission of Road Safety, 750 deaths were recorded in 7,538 accidents throughout the country in 2025. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, there have already been 153 fatalities.
The authorities attribute 72% of these deadly incidents to human error.
