An irate resident from Trinidad has publicly condemned the recurring theft of barrels stored in the gated porch of her home, situated just a block away from the city's central park.
In a video shared on Facebook, Ana, known as Cuba Travel Advisor, recounts how thieves brazenly struck in broad daylight in one of the busiest districts of this UNESCO World Heritage city.
According to Ana, the thefts occurred on two separate occasions. During the first incident, two barrels were taken from the three she had placed on each shelf of her porch. The culprits returned the day before her video was posted, stealing two more barrels after unlocking the porch gate, which she had kept shut.
"They robbed me in broad daylight, right in the heart of Trinidad, because I live just a block from the park," she declares.
The complainant is particularly outraged by the thieves' audacity: the theft took place directly in front of a consistently busy store on a street bustling with foot traffic. "That store always has people; the street is always full of people," she points out. According to her account, any passerby or store customer could have witnessed the thieves leaving with the barrels.
"They must have opened the gate, and I have a horse inside that might have seen them, and anyone could have seen them leave," she adds.
Ending her video with a mix of sarcasm and resignation, Ana invites the perpetrators to finish what they started: "I would like to know who it was. Come on, take those last two, because having just those two left alone there bothers me."
This incident further highlights the insecurity faced by the Cuban population amidst a surge in criminal activity over recent years. The Cuban Citizen Audit Observatory (OCAC) documented 2,833 confirmed crimes in 2025, a staggering 115% increase from 2024, with thefts topping the list at 1,536 cases.
In July of this year, the Municipal Prosecutor's Office in Trinidad was actively investigating six alleged thefts of fuel and other goods from state entities.
Throughout 2023, reports detailed forced entries and thefts in warehouses across the Sancti Spíritus province—361 cases were recorded by May of that year—as well as the burglary of a well-known doctor's home in Trinidad, where a motorbike and appliances were stolen.
