Trump Introduces Trump TV Following Media Blacklist: What's on the Air?

This week, the White House unveiled Trump TV, its own 24/7 streaming channel, available via the institution's official YouTube channel. This move aligns with the recent boycott by major television networks against presidential coverage, protesting the ban imposed on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.

The announcement was made through the White House's official account on X, stating: "Trump TV is now broadcasting. 24/7, updated in real-time, featuring past highlights, announcements, and the latest and greatest from the administration, all in one place. Not all significant moments have reached your television, but now they can."

Launch of Trump TV and Its Content

The channel made its debut at 7:00 PM local time on Monday with Trump's speech at Mount Rushmore on July 3, celebrating America's 250th Independence Day, where he declared, "America will never be a communist country." The second broadcast featured his inaugural address from January 20, 2025.

A promotional video for the channel sparked additional controversy by seemingly using clips from shows like Friends, Seinfeld, Breaking Bad, The Simpsons, and SpongeBob SquarePants, as well as films like Home Alone and The Dark Knight, without apparent authorization. The soundtrack featured "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles, raising questions about potential copyright violations involving studios like Warner Bros., Fox, Sony Pictures Television, and Disney.

Media Blacklist and Boycott of Presidential Coverage

Last Friday, Trump announced via Truth Social an "immediate" ban on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico, accusing them of spreading "fake news" and labeling them as "third-rate clowns" who "violate national security with false and defamatory reports." On Monday, the three media outlets filed an emergency lawsuit with a federal judge in the District of Columbia, citing a violation of the First Amendment.

Their joint statement emphasized, "This ban could not represent a more direct assault on the First Amendment or a more flagrant violation of our fundamental constitutional principles." On the same day, networks including ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox News ceased participation in the White House's rotating coverage system.

Bryan Boughton, head of Fox News' Washington bureau and acting pool president, was firm in his stance: "As of today, the television pool will not cover events designated as pool coverage for the president. There will be no replacement pool."

Vice President J.D. Vance defended the ban, claiming the three outlets publish "92%" negative stories about the administration. "If they're going to partake in what is effectively extreme left propaganda, why would a Republican White House grant them special access?" he questioned.

Comparisons to State Media in Russia and China

The launch prompted immediate reactions. California's Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, described it as "truly autocratic behavior from a failed president," comparing it to "literally, state television." Former White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham during Trump's first term stated, "You know who else does this? Russia, China, and Iran, to name a few."

Weijia Jiang, former president of the White House Correspondents' Association, warned on Fox News that "if the Government only shows you what it wants, you have to ask: what are we missing?" José Zamora, Americas director for the Committee to Protect Journalists, was more direct, telling Univision that "what Trump did is illegal," and that the move could lead to "intimidation of other media outlets who see that being critical of the president results in punishment."

The rollout of Trump TV comes as the president's approval rating has dropped to 32%, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll—the lowest it's been—and with about a month and a half until the November 2026 midterm elections, which will see the renewal of the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate.
