After a 12-year hiatus, Cuba's men's volleyball team is set to make its Olympic return, having defeated Canada 3-1 this Saturday, securing their spot for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The Cuban squad achieved victory with set scores of 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, and 25-22 in the NORCECA Olympic Qualifying Tournament final held at the Avenir Centre in Moncton, Canada, as confirmed by Volleyball World.
This win marks Cuba's first Olympic appearance since Rio 2016. The Los Angeles 2028 Games will represent the eighth time Cuban men's volleyball competes at the Olympics.
Leading the charge, Marlon Yant delivered a stellar performance in the decisive match, scoring 25 points through 21 attacks, three aces, and one block. Team captain Miguel Ángel López also played a crucial role with 22 points, while Stephen Maar was Canada's top scorer with 22 points.
Cuba outperformed the host team in attacks, leading 62-57, and was particularly dominant in service with nine aces compared to Canada's three. Despite this, Canada held a slight edge in blocks, recording eight to Cuba's six.
Prior to reaching the final, the Cuban team defeated the Dominican Republic 3-0 on Friday (32-30, 25-19, 25-15). Meanwhile, Canada secured their finals spot by overcoming Mexico, also in straight sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-13).
Cuba earned the right to compete in this qualifier by finishing third in the 2026 NORCECA Continental Championship. Although the United States won the regional title, they were already assured a place in Los Angeles 2028 as the host nation.
This Olympic comeback also has a generational aspect. Among the current roster, only Miguel Ángel López, Osniel Melgarejo, and libero Román García have Olympic experience from Rio 2016. For most of the team, this will be their inaugural Olympics.
The qualification comes after challenging years for Cuban men's volleyball, marked by the departure of numerous players from the island's sports system and previous failures to qualify for Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
Even this season raised concerns, as Cuba finished 16th out of 18 teams in the 2026 Nations League.
