A Cuban national and three other migrants were saved from a portable water tank in which they were trapped, unable to escape on their own, during a Border Patrol operation in Eagle Pass, Texas.
The rescue took place on September 14, when agents from the Eagle Pass station in the Del Rio Sector stopped a 2007 Ford F-150 and found the four individuals hidden inside the tank, as reported by Border Report.
To free the migrants, the agents had to use power tools to cut open the tank from the outside since the individuals were stuck inside without any means to open it themselves.
In addition to the Cuban, the tank also contained two Bolivians and one Colombian.
Once freed, the four declined medical assistance and were taken to the Uvalde South station for immigration processing.
The driver of the vehicle, a 19-year-old U.S. citizen, was handed over to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and faces federal charges related to human smuggling.
Dangerous Tactics in Migrant Smuggling
Anthony "Scott" Good, Chief Patrol Agent of the Del Rio Sector, described the method used to transport the migrants as "dangerous and barbaric."
"Smugglers have no regard for the safety of those they see as mere human cargo," said Good. "Confining individuals in tight spaces with no chance of escape is both dangerous and inhumane. Without the intervention of our highly trained agents, this incident could have ended in tragedy."
This rescue is one of several recent incidents in the border area. On September 7, a Border Patrol canine unit detected three migrants locked inside a freight train car in Uvalde County.
Just a few days earlier, on August 30, another trained dog alerted agents to a sealed car carrier near Knippa, Texas, where they discovered eight migrants, including a child.
Ongoing Risks for Migrants
These operations highlight the dangers posed by the smuggling networks' methods to hide individuals and the peril migrants face during these journeys.
In Texas, there have been previous operations where over a dozen migrants were found trapped in vehicles or other spaces used for clandestine transport.
The incident takes place amid ongoing risks faced by those attempting to enter the United States irregularly, including Cubans recently detained after illegally crossing the border.
