The radio station further clarified that the distribution to municipalities is supported by other companies. Espinosa noted that school buses, available vehicles, and even medical transport have been employed for this purpose.
Once the newspapers reach each municipality, the usual distribution process continues through postal workers from different units.
The primary challenge arises when there's no fuel to make the trip to Santa Clara. In such instances, the pickup is postponed, causing newspapers to arrive one or two days late.
Impact of Fuel Shortage on Newspaper Delivery
The official admitted that there have been cases where newspapers haven't been delivered for an entire week, with delays extending to the following week, although he assured that such occurrences are rare.
"It has happened, but it's not the norm. Typically, if there's a delay, it's not more than a day or two: usually by Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. However, there have been very few instances where the delay extends longer," he explained.
The difficulties in transporting newspapers come after a severe resource crisis earlier this year forced a drastic reduction in the printing and circulation of newspapers in Cuba.
Since March 2, publications like Granma and Juventud Rebelde have been printed only once a week on Tuesdays, with just eight pages, while provincial newspapers have ceased printing altogether.
The reasons cited included shortages of paper, fuel, and financial resources. However, the issue is more profound, with the Cuban printing industry suffering from a structural crisis characterized by a lack of materials, outdated technology, and financial constraints that authorities have been unable to address.
