The Cuban Telecommunications Company, ETECSA, announced via social media on Monday that the primary telecommunications connection to Isla de la Juventud has been restored. This comes after the special municipality was left nearly isolated for over six days.

The disruption began on September 8, when damage to the two maritime links that sustain connectivity to the area cut off mobile services entirely and limited fixed-line telephony to local calls only.

According to the state-run company, the restoration was achieved through "several days of collaborative efforts by our workers and other institutions."

Adverse weather conditions significantly hindered progress. On September 12, despite specialists pinpointing the exact location of the fault, inclement weather prevented the cable from being brought to the surface to perform the necessary fiber splicing with precision.

During this period, Cuban families, both on and off the island, voiced their frustration over being unable to contact loved ones, while ETECSA did not provide an estimated timeline for restoration.

As an interim solution, ETECSA maintained an emergency satellite link to ensure only the transmission of state radio and television services, without restoring full mobile or fixed connectivity.

The day before the official announcement, ETECSA indicated a gradual recovery of voice and data traffic, suggesting that the splicing efforts were beginning to yield results.

Isla de la Juventud is Cuba's only special municipality, relying exclusively on submarine cables for its connection to the national network. This dependency makes it particularly susceptible to extended outages, as repairs require specialized vessels and favorable maritime conditions.

Despite this positive development, the infrastructure's recovery is incomplete. ETECSA has cautioned that the second damaged maritime link remains out of service and that their specialists "are continuously monitoring the service parameters in the territory."
