Gas prices in Florida have again surpassed the $4 per gallon mark, with the average price reaching $4.14 on Sunday, according to a report released on Monday by AAA. Experts warn that this figure might continue to rise.

This increase represents a jump of 23 cents from last week, 19 cents above last month, and a staggering $1.18 more than a year ago. These numbers underscore the cumulative impact of escalating tensions in the Middle East on the energy market.

Mark Jenkins, spokesperson for AAA - The Auto Club Group, explained that the intensification of tensions in that region last week led to a significant rise in crude oil prices, which has been directly reflected at the gas pumps.

"Drivers in Florida are now seeing these higher costs at the gas stations. Should crude oil prices remain high, motorists might face even more upward pressure on gas prices this week," Jenkins warned.

The spokesperson further noted that "the statewide average could reach $4.19 per gallon if crude oil prices stay elevated."

The root cause of this price surge is the armed conflict between the United States and Iran over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passes.

Since early September, there have been attacks on oil tankers in the area, and the United States has gone so far as to escort 40 commercial ships carrying 18 million barrels of crude in an unprecedented wartime operation.

As a direct result, the price of crude oil in the United States has jumped nearly 20% in the last two weeks, rising from $83 per barrel to over $100.

AAA emphasizes that crude oil accounts for more than half of the price consumers pay for gasoline, which explains how quickly fluctuations in the crude market impact fuel prices.

This increase is also part of a cyclical pattern specific to Florida. According to AAA's report, "prices at stations typically spike at the beginning of the week before gradually declining throughout the rest of the week and over the weekend."

Before the recent geopolitical escalation, this cycle pushed prices to a peak of around $3.99 per gallon. With crude trading above $100, that ceiling has risen, and the statewide average has settled above four dollars.

There's a noticeable disparity across different areas of the state. The most expensive metropolitan markets are West Palm Beach-Boca Raton at $4.30 per gallon, followed by Gainesville ($4.21) and Naples ($4.19). On the other end of the spectrum, Panama City and Pensacola offer the cheapest fuel at $3.97 per gallon, along with Crestview-Fort Walton Beach at $3.98.

This spike comes just weeks after gasoline hit a record high in the United States over the Labor Day weekend, when the national average reached $4.14 per gallon, surpassing the previous record for that holiday of $3.82 set in 2012.

The future trajectory of gas prices will largely depend on the oil market: further increases in crude could lead to additional hikes at the pumps, while a drop might relieve some of the pressure on Florida drivers.

Factors Influencing Gas Prices in Florida

Why have gas prices in Florida increased recently?

Gas prices in Florida have risen due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict over the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to a significant increase in crude oil prices.

How does crude oil price affect gasoline prices?

Crude oil makes up more than half of the price consumers pay for gasoline, so fluctuations in crude oil prices directly impact the cost at the pump.

What is the current trend in gas prices in Florida?

Gas prices in Florida are currently trending upwards, with the potential to reach $4.19 per gallon if crude oil prices remain high.
