The informal currency market in Cuba kicked off this Monday with significant increases for its three main benchmarks: the U.S. dollar gained more ground, the euro took another leap, and the MLC (Freely Convertible Currency) saw the most substantial movement of the day.
According to the exchange rate, the U.S. dollar was trading at 694 Cuban pesos (CUP), up from 693 CUP in the previous session.
The American currency has been showing strength all week: just seven days ago, it stood at 683 CUP. Over the past month, it has climbed from 664 CUP to the current 694 CUP, marking its highest level in the last 30 days.
The euro opened at 793 CUP, five pesos more than the 788 CUP posted on Sunday. The European currency remains the priciest in the informal market, outpacing the dollar by 99 pesos.
A week ago, the euro was valued at 775 CUP, gaining 18 pesos over that period. Monday's rate should be considered indicative, as data was still sparse during the early hours of the trading day.
MLC's Noteworthy Rise
The most striking increase was seen in the MLC, which climbed to around 482 CUP from 464 CUP recorded the day before.
This represents a jump of 18 pesos in just one day and nearly 60 pesos more than its value a week ago.
U.S. Dollar: 694 CUP. Euro: 793 CUP. MLC: 482 CUP. While street rates continue to surge, the official rates from the Central Bank of Cuba for Segment III remain at 655 CUP per dollar and 760 CUP per euro.
This positions the informal dollar 39 pesos above the official value and leaves the euro with a 33-peso difference, further highlighting the ongoing pressure on the Cuban peso amid foreign currency shortages, low wages, and the rising cost of living.
