Cuba's Ministry of Transportation announced on Sunday that these restrictions will begin on Monday, September 14, and continue through Tuesday, September 15, with closures scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day.
On Monday, the Havana-to-Cabaña direction will be closed, but vehicles will still be able to travel in the opposite direction, from Cabaña to Havana.
On Tuesday, the closures will reverse, shutting down the Cabaña-to-Havana route while keeping the Havana-to-Cabaña direction open.
The Provincial Traffic Safety Commission advised those needing to use the tunnel to do so before 9:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. to avoid disruptions.
Alternative Routes and Safety Precautions
During the closure hours, suggested alternatives include Vía Blanca, the Port Ring, and Port Avenue. Authorities also urged drivers to reduce speed in the area, follow traffic officer instructions, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition to prevent breakdowns inside the tunnel.
Coincidentally, this maintenance comes shortly after a minibus became stuck at the tunnel's exit, an event that went viral on social media due to its unusual nature.
Recent Challenges in Havana's Transportation Network
The tunnel has been at the center of other recent incidents tied to the city's transportation woes. In June, many Havana residents walked through the tunnel after waiting hours for transportation. Earlier in March, images of an almost empty tunnel highlighted the impact of fuel shortages on Havana's mobility.
