Cuba's men's volleyball team delivered a crushing defeat to Guatemala on Saturday, winning 3-0 with set scores of 25-13, 25-14, and 25-10, to uphold their unbeaten streak at the 2026 Norceca Men's Championship taking place in Moncton, Canada.

According to the state-run agency Prensa Latina, this marked Cuba's second consecutive victory in Group B, following a similar 3-0 triumph over the Dominican Republic on Friday in the tournament's opening match.

The Cuban squad displayed total dominance over Guatemala, excelling in every aspect of the game. They outperformed their opponents in attacks by 43-23, blocks by 11-1, and aces by 6-1, with the Guatemalans also conceding 15 points through their own errors.

Osniel Mergarejo and Marlon Yant spearheaded the Cuban offense, each amassing eight points. On the Guatemalan side, Carlos López was the standout player with seven points, closely followed by Andy Leonardo Blanco with six.

With a total of six points, Cuba leads Group B and is on the brink of securing their place in the next stage of the competition.

The United States holds the second spot with three points after also sweeping Guatemala 3-0 on Friday, with scores of 25-13, 25-13, and 25-11. On Saturday, the American team faced the Dominican Republic, who, alongside Guatemala, remained without points after two rounds.

This strong start is particularly noteworthy given that the Cuban team arrived in Moncton the day of their debut, prompting the Cuban federation to request that the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) reschedule their first match to later in the day. Despite this logistical challenge, Cuba responded with two commanding victories in straight sets.

The current performance is a stark contrast to their finish in the 2026 Nations League, where Cuba placed 16th out of 18 teams with only three wins and nine losses. However, the team regained momentum by securing a bronze medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo 2026.

The 2026 Norceca Men's Continental Championship, running until September 19 at Moncton's Avenir Centre, holds dual significance for Cuba. Not only does the tournament offer three spots for the 2027 Volleyball World Championship, but it also determines which teams will continue to vie for the Norceca Olympic berth for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, goals that the Cuban team is increasingly confident about pursuing.
