Former U.S. President Joe Biden, at 83, disclosed that the radiation therapy he underwent to combat prostate cancer was successful, marking his most detailed public statement regarding his health since his diagnosis was revealed.
In a comprehensive post on his X account during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Biden recounted that when diagnosed last year, the cancer had already metastasized to his bones.
"So, have the conversation with your doctor. Don't put it off," he advised.
The former president emphasized prevention, noting that when detected early, the five-year survival rate for prostate cancer is nearly 100%. He urged men at average risk to discuss screening with their doctors at age 50, with follow-ups every two to four years. He specifically pointed out that Black men should begin these conversations at 45, as they face a nearly 70% higher chance of developing the disease and are two to four times more likely to die from it. "An outrage in the world's wealthiest nation," he emphasized.
Biden expressed gratitude to the healthcare professionals who have helped manage his cancer and continue to care for him. "The radiation treatment last fall worked as expected, and I'm still doing the things I care about, like finishing my memoirs," he stated.
"It is my hope and prayer that by sharing our experience and being part of this vital conversation, we can help save lives. Talk to your doctors. Ask the tough questions," he concluded.
Prostate Cancer Journey and Treatment
The former president was diagnosed in May 2025 with a Gleason score 9 tumor—the highest on the aggressiveness scale—with bone metastases present at detection, though categorized as hormone-sensitive, which allowed for active treatment.
In October, Biden began a regimen of combined radiation and hormone therapy, completing his treatment cycle on the 21st of that month.
However, the situation took a turn on August 8, when his son, Hunter Biden, revealed in a BBC Newsnight interview that the cancer had progressed, causing severe and debilitating pain.
"The cancer has spread, it has metastasized into his bones and beyond. It's very painful and, in many ways, very debilitating," he stated.
The former president's latest message offers a more optimistic outlook on the results of the radiation therapy.
