On Tuesday, U.S. diplomats from the Embassy in Cuba joined Cuban worshipers in a procession through the streets of Havana to commemorate the Day of Our Lady of Charity, the island's patron saint.
The diplomatic mission shared their involvement on Facebook, posting images from the mass held at the Parish of Our Lady of Charity, presided over by Cardinal and Archbishop of Havana, Juan de la Caridad García Rodríguez, followed by the subsequent procession through Havana's streets.
"This afternoon, officials from the U.S. Embassy stood with the Cuban people in Havana during the Mass honoring Our Lady of Charity and the procession through the city streets," the embassy stated in their post, which included the hashtag #ConCubanosDeAPie and flags of both nations.
The images feature Deputy Chief of Mission Roy Perrin seated inside the church, participating in the celebration, and walking alongside the crowd, an event that blends Catholic devotion with national identity.
The embassy also released a video on Tuesday recalling the visit of Chief of Mission Mike Hammer and his wife Margret to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity in El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba, where they lit a candle for Cuba and its people.
This visit was part of a broader tour to engage with recipients of humanitarian aid provided by the Trump administration after Hurricane Melissa, which devastated more than 80% of the sanctuary's stained glass windows and toppled a marble angel.
"On this day of Cachita, we share the faith and hope that unites so many Cubans both on and off the island," the embassy added in their message.
The diplomats' participation in religious events aligns with an ongoing policy of engagement with Cuban civil and religious society that the embassy has upheld for the past two years. On Palm Sunday, Perrin and his wife attended the Basilica of San Francisco de Asís in Havana, expressing solidarity with the people and political prisoners.
In February 2025, Hammer visited the El Cobre Sanctuary, leaving a bouquet of sunflowers as an offering and describing the experience as "beautiful and moving."
