Authorities in Songo-La Maya, Santiago de Cuba, have apprehended a man following the discovery of a marijuana plantation in the Yerba de Guinea area, where approximately 170 marijuana plants were confiscated.

The pro-government Facebook page, Héroes del Moncada, reported on Tuesday that the plantation was uncovered by officers from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT)

The post indicated that the individual held accountable for cultivating and maintaining the marijuana plants was arrested at the scene, with around 170 plants seized from his possession.

Details regarding the identity or age of the detainee were not disclosed, nor was information provided about how long the plantation had been operating or whether additional individuals are under investigation.

Santiago de Cuba province has seen a number of marijuana-related incidents in 2025.

Marijuana Cases Surge in Santiago de Cuba

In May, within the same Songo-La Maya area, another young man was detained after authorities found over 2,000 marijuana plants in Salvador Rosales. Several others were arrested in connection with the cultivation and distribution of the drug during that operation as well.

Two months prior, in the Tercer Frente municipality, law enforcement arrested another grower who was cultivating about 200 plants and had more than 2,000 marijuana seeds in a mountainous area.

In June, an operation in Sigua, Santiago de Cuba, led to the arrest of a man possessing over 19,000 seeds and approximately 950 marijuana plants at his residence.

Furthermore, the region has seen court proceedings labeled as "exemplary," resulting in lengthy prison sentences for offenses related to marijuana and other substances.
