Cuban Woman Outraged as Police Release Suspected Attacker of Her Parents in Bayamo

The Revolutionary National Police (PNR) in Bayamo has come under fire for releasing a man accused of violently assaulting two elderly individuals less than 24 hours after his initial detention.

Rosy Rosales, the daughter of the victims, took to Facebook to publicly express her outrage. She identified the alleged assailant as Abel Enrique Saborit García, who had initially been held at the Provincial Instruction Unit near Las Tunas, Bayamo, where legal proceedings were expected to take place.

However, Rosy reported that the PNR made a specific request to transfer the suspect to the facility known as "La Tercera," located on the road to Santiago de Cuba. It was from this location that Saborit García was released without any formal questioning or investigation taking place.

The victims of this egregious attack are Rosa Rosales Leyva, a 59-year-old professor at the University of Medical Sciences of Bayamo, and her husband, Jorge Aguilera Reyes. Rosa sustained a facial fracture along with bruises and lacerations, all of which were documented in photographs. Jorge suffered a severely swollen left eye, visible in video call images shared by the family.

The police justified their controversial decision to release the suspect by citing a lack of sufficient evidence to hold him in custody.

Rosy Rosales fiercely disputed this reasoning, stating, "So, to them, the injuries and assaults on my parents mean nothing, nor do the eyewitness accounts from those who were present and came forward to testify."

Adding to the severity of the case, the family reported that two minors were present and at risk during the attack.

According to Rosy Rosales' allegations, the suspect has a history of 17 prior incidents involving assault, threats, and injuries.

The young woman pointed fingers directly at the head of "La Tercera," Euqueni Vázquez Hidalgo, holding him responsible for the release of Abel Enrique Saborit García.

"What was the urgency in moving an aggressor from the Provincial Instruction Unit near Las Tunas where Abel Enrique Saborit García was held and should have remained? Or is it that the real person behind this is bribing you?" Rosy questioned.

An anonymous source informed the family that the release might have been facilitated by the suspect's uncle, Abel Saborit Guerrero, allegedly an agent of the DTI (Technical Investigation Department of the MININT). Rosy Rosales included a screenshot as evidence but did not disclose the source's identity.

"His uncle, Abel Saborit Guerrero, an agent of the Technical Investigation Department (DTI), plays a crucial role in his freedom and protection," Rosales wrote, demanding a thorough investigation into all involved parties.

Bayamo, the capital of Granma province, has been plagued by numerous violent incidents in 2026, including femicides and severe assaults, as reported by independent media outlets.

The PNR is increasingly under scrutiny for alleged corruption and arbitrary actions. Just days before this incident, the police introduced a 24-hour hotline for complaints, amid rising public pressure.

The Facebook page "NiO Reporting a Crime" further amplified the incident, sharing videos capturing the moment of the assault and the suspect's arrest. The family also seeks an investigation into whether the attack on Rosa is connected to a previous assault on Jorge.

"I hold the police accountable for releasing the attacker of my parents, Abel Enrique Saborit García. Should anything happen to my parents, my children, or my family, I hold the police responsible," Rosy Rosales declared. She vowed to pursue the case "to the fullest extent."
