Cuban volleyball star, Melissa Vargas, led Turkey to victory in the 2026 EuroVolley women's championship on Sunday. In a thrilling final that stretched to five sets, Turkey triumphed over reigning Olympic and world champions Italy, with set scores of 25-16, 22-25, 25-12, 21-25, and 10-15.

The athlete from Cienfuegos, who became a Turkish citizen in 2021, was named MVP of the final after scoring 28 points, with 25 coming from attacks, showcasing an exceptional individual performance in Istanbul.

Despite a strong showing from Italy's Paola Egonu, who matched Vargas with 28 points, and Antropova contributing 16, they could not withstand Turkey's relentless push. Turkey's second top scorer was Gunes, with 12 points.

This victory marks Turkey's consecutive European title, having also won in 2023 with Vargas as a key player. The podium saw Turkey in first place, followed by Italy, Serbia securing third, and Poland in fourth. Beyond the continental title, the win significantly impacts future competitions: Turkey has secured its spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, while Serbia and Poland have qualified for the 2027 World Championships, with Italy already having a guaranteed place.

Born on October 16, 1999, in Cienfuegos, Vargas arrived in Turkey in 2018 to play for local clubs, including Fenerbahçe, and received Turkish citizenship in April 2021. She debuted with the national team in May 2023, continuously amassing titles and individual accolades.

In the 2023 EuroVolley, she was named MVP of the tournament after scoring 41 points in the final against Serbia and was recognized as the world's best volleyball player by Volleybox that same year. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Vargas led Turkey to the semifinals with extraordinary performances, including a 42-point game against China.

By July this year, she had already reclaimed the MVP title in the Nations League final (VNL 2026), scoring 33 points in the win over Brazil. The EuroVolley 2026 triumph is the latest achievement in a series of successes that solidify her status as one of the greatest figures in world volleyball today and the foremost representative of Cuban sports on a foreign stage.

"The spectacular player continues to establish herself as one of the stars of world volleyball," summarized sports journalist Raúl Rodríguez in celebrating Turkey's title on social media.
